First things first - people have many different tastes, i am not judging fdevs and their preferences, just want to know the reason...

Why most of the women in the game are... aesthetically unpleasing?

If it wasn't for the name and hair i wouldn't even recognise a woman in this picture.

And some of those that even resembles women most of the time have this... "onionhead" haircut or are bald.
Seriously... Felicity farseer is one of the beauties of the bubble if i hardly think about it.
This really bugs me. So far i have seen maybe 3 ladylike npcs.
Is it because of 1000 years of evolution, or long space travel?
Maybe their organisms are deteriorating after exposure to space up to the point they all look like that?

It is possible we will never know and this will be one of many unsolved mysteries of this game.

Since our NPCs are just mugshots that we normally don't see, I pick mine based on their voice and lines rather than their looks. For the most part I prefer the male pilots because they tend to feel more like a crewmate based on what they say and how they say it.

Yup, a lot better (no sarcasm here).

I still can't help to notice most of the women have a hairsyle than needs to be cut out of photo.

Too many ugly humans. Oh Thargoids, please do something. Aaaanyway, I prefer male crews. They sound more tactical the way they talk as someone mentioned above. But if I were to be some ragtag, I'd go with the females.

Oh Millicent. She is currently residing at Jaques Station, experimenting with drugs and audiovisual holoprojections in 4-dimensional simreality, while I'm out here exploring or whatever. We share a love for Dropships. Her artistic vision and creative pursuits can be very expensive sometimes, so I'm obliged to discover at least a dozen unexplored earth-like worlds before reaching Sacaqawea Space Port at the end of this month, hopefully. You see, she can appear rather pale sometimes, a quality that has nothing to do with her Leestian Evil Juice addiction, (which is totally under control by the way), so I was not permitted to post this image before some subtle color enhancements. I cannot remember which Hadean anarchic outpost I found her crew membership application for the first time, but she really did outclass anything else the place had to offer and has been around ever since, mostly doing my taxes, PR, and umm.. executive things.

Those are virtual assets, NPCs.
White - knighting will accomplish nothing in this situation.
Unless you are doing this to feel good about yourself.

Look at the mirror yourself.
You are attacking a stranger over a matter of taste.

What am I white knighting?

How am I attacking anyone?

Why do the NPCs look like that? look in the mirror.
Are you saying what you see in the mirror is offensive?

You say everyone has their own preferences then ask why do the NPCs not confirm to your preferences.
You answered your own question, that is the Lore and roleplay behind it.

Did I read somewhere they were updating the slf female models from 3 avatar types to more?

Also something about them being on the bridge?

Maybe I was spending too much time with the Dweller.
