Newcomer / Intro Seeing behind you??

Its a thousand years into the future... Humanity has the Frame drive allowing it to jump huge amounts of space.. We have ships that can travel hundreds of light years.. even thousands... BUT... we never figured out how to put a camera.. a viewer... that allows us to look BEHIND us. Not even a rear view mirror.

We are all clones who were made 'sentient and aware' 2 minutes before we get that mysterious letter, thats why we have no history or memory of anything at all.

Before that we were 'stored' horizontally and didnt use any muscles so all were atrophic. The Remlock suit has been supporting our arm muscles to develop to fly and fight. Every time we log off the Remlock suit gets up and stretches our legs autonomously but we have been too weak to walk until now. Another 8 months or so and we should have enough muscle to stand without realising whats happened.

Its weak but the best I can do :)

Your 3300 "advanced" spaceship is flying on a 2020 potato that doesn't want to render 2 different views simultaneously because that would totally pooch your framerates. But yes, you can imagine as much outrage about imaginary technological degradation as you like if it makes you feel better.

Never mind. When you buy Odyssey (aka Fleet Carriers and Mining Part II) you'll be able to walk to the rear of your ship and look through a porthole.
Not long to wait now. According to Frontier it's going to be released early next year - or October 2021 as the rest of us call it.

Are ship interiors confirmed? I haven't seen anything specific about that.

Another thing I noticed in this game, packed with amazing technology, upgrades, trading and sofisticated politics is the fact nobody seems to care about a pair of binoculars anymore... That could come in so handy on planets!

I'm just imagineering - like all the other random speculation on the web based on a single, short video.
Personally I'm past caring.
I bought Elite because I thought it was an intelligent game. But as it's developed the imaginative and intelligent bits seem to have been pushed into the background. There seems to be no plot any more. The reward system is unbalanced beyond belief, the much vaunted fleet carriers turned out to be a spaceport with a FSD, rather than just a base for your own ships, and at a price 96% of us can't afford.
The pointless obsession with mining, so you can earn lots of credits, to buy a FC, so you do more mining to pay for the upkeep etc etc is plain mad.
Things that could have been developed for the benefit of all have been ignored. The missions are the same boring stuff reworded and full of the usual brain dead stuff about assassination and massacres. The crappy HUD is unchanged, there's no on-screen menus outside of the clunky panels, The NPCs are ignorable, the spaceports are basically all the same models, the SRV looks like it was designed in the 1960's.
I could go on until it gets dark - but there's no point.
IMHO the game is broken. Frontier have paid too much attention to the verbose top 5% who play with the sole intention of slaughtering everything in sight and ignored the rest of us who hoped for something different to yet another sad shoot-em-up.

Personally I have little hope for the future. The short video showing space-legs didn't look that impressive. Rather depressing to notice that the first thing that caught the attention was the weapons !!
I can't see what tenuous atmosphere's will add to the game. The sky won't be black - but that's it. You're unlikely to burn up on entry - all that happens normally is that the ship effectively stops when you get it wrong. Space legs will probably mean you'll just be able to do even more mining and kill more things from a different perspective.

Unless Odyssey goes off on a completely new tangent with, as yet undisclosed, new content the game is dead.

PS:
I suspect Frontier don't care much either - they just want everybody to buy Planet Zoo.

......... Not even a rear view mirror.

This has actually been asked for* frequently in the Suggestions forum. As mentioned already, the scanner display is actually perfectly serviceable for this purpose, one just has to get used to it.

(* Although I suspect a ploy there to get that so as to justify the requests for fuzzy-dice to hang from it.)

Actually I use the camera suite a lot for this when in the SRV. You can move the camera a long way (I can't remember how far) so as to search-out details of a distant settlement, cache etc.

Plus you can zoom in and out with the camera in addition to flying it closer or more usefully up so as to see over things.

I keep forgetting about that - I do have it bound but I see now that the zoom in and out buttons are covered in dust.

(I also keep forgetting to click "Post Reply" )
