I'm using it since day one and the only thing "missing" are the up/down and left/right flight capabilities. If you are playing in Solo like me you are not going to have a problem with that, I'm using R/F (up/down) and Q/E (left/right) with the keyboard just in case I miss the landing pad like for minor adjustments. The other keys I use are "G" for when I'm interdicted to mark the enemy target (not always needed) and "L" for the lights.
The most important button is the "UI panel focus" which in combination with the "hat" button you can change between screens in the ship and basically to select every other command (like even turning on/off the lights, open cargo hatch, open Galaxy map, System map...and everything else with the hats and UI focus is accesible).
In my opinion there is no need at all for having more than enough buttons to each thing, if you can use the panels quickly as well of course.
This is how I use it...barely changed from the standard configuration, it is as simple as it can get:
PS: Perhaps you can add the secondary function (red/green light home button) so you can have up/down and left/right controls, but this Joystic needs a secondary stick or hat to do that job and for its price will be perfect. I have it since its release and played games such as FSX, Wings of Prey, HawX, Battlefield 2, and more and still kicking. I bought it for 36€...since the release of Elite the price went a little bit higher than that. Still highly recommend it.
