Seems that matchmaker treats prestige rank reset same as full clear save - I've been pitted with level 1-3 players whole day (until I got to rank 20)

After prestige reset yesterday evening my level dropped to 1 (as expected), but the game started to pit me against very low level players, so my matches today mostly ended up with 7-0, 8-0 scores until I ranked up to level 20.

Well now I get to play with players up to level 35 (some with few prestige resets already), but still no level 40-50 players.

Clearly it's a stupid matchmaker setup (prestige reset shouldn't mean loss of skill to it or inability to compete with high level players). Or on the off chance it's just my bad luck today.

And last 5-6 matches were ridden with huge network glitches - not fun. I won most of them though, so it's not hurting too much :D

Except that, according to FD, the matchmaker doesn't pay attention to rank at all and uses an internal ELO-like score instead. Unless that's getting reset by prestiging too, which would be ridiculous.

I do think that sometime in the last week or two FD tweaked the matchmaker to make it easier to find a game (at the cost of more often pitting noobs vs vets).

I've always had imbalanced matches, it's just that I'd have to wait forever to get one. There's the other problem that there are pilots on prestige grinds that will LEAVE a match with anyone that competes with them (so they can get shorter whack-a-mole matches). All the time you see them pop into a match and leave immediately. You'll only ever join them in a match with all new pilots, and they leave as soon as they die once or twice.

Since I've never really had balanced matches, a lot of my brand-new player experience was 2 minute matches with prestige reset players, and sitting in lobbies with them because after a couple two minute matches everyone quit. The frustration wasn't that someone was grinding us, it was that I had to wait so long for a match because everybody quit.

At least now new players don't have to wait an hour for a match. The last few ranks before prestige were absolutely miserable, before, too, because everyone would quit whatever match I joined (didn't matter if I won or lost) and I'd sit in the queue for a few minutes or twenty. Took FOREVER.

I think most of the time the game struggles to make any sort of game let alone something with matchmaking based on ability.

Interesting, I thought it was because they didn't want their precious K/D ratio to drop once I joined and started killing them. But its just to get their prestige ranking faster. Personally I found doing some team death matches appeared to rank me up faster. I get between 1500-2500 xp per TDM game vs around 800-1200 per DM game. Yes it takes longer for a TDM to complete, but at least I am having fun doing it. I guess if I can clear out a regular DM in under a minute and do that several times it is in fact faster ranking doing that. I am only prestige 2, getting close to 3. I have seen people with at least 5 maybe even 6.

Who knows, for real; KDR or shorter grind, all I know is that whack-a-mole is not fun (I've taken to using the Plasma Repeaters all the time and putting them on separate triggers so vs new pilots I can just use one, and just about any pilot in a Condor can be a challenge to kill with those, anyway). What's funny is I kind of suck with hit-scan, now (no power management skills).

If I am matched with a bunch of noobs, I will just slaughter them mercilessly. Sometimes when I am feeling generous I will put up my plasma repeater loadout (I use that when the opposing team decides they want to all run in eagles and sidewinders). Usually when I decide I do that, some good player will show up and I will have a hard time with them due to this. I honestly enjoy CQC much more when there are one or two good opposing players around.

The other day I chased one guy across the map for like 2 minutes straight, I would get his shields down and he would manage to get the shield boost just in time, then while chasing him I would get it down, and just as it dropped another boost. Skills were very evenly matched and the chase was amazing, so much more fun to whacking noobs. In the end he managed a boost and weapons damage in quick succession and he flipped around and killed me. Which didn't matter at that point it was just a fun chase.
