Iirc, yes, it counts. Not sure about different types (standard/core) of mining and not sure how to check.
It's the number of tons you have refined... it shows up in your commander stats.
Right panel, engineers, scroll down, should tell you how far you've got with her.

I haven't done Bill Turner yet. What's the issue, does Bromellite take much longer to mine than Painite?

My mining stats show:-
- Minerals Refined = 341
- Materials Collected = 5997
And my Selene Jean progress shows 340/500 ... so that means "minerals refined" == "tons"
Only 160 to go then ...
Although on my first run back, I did end up getting caught by a pirate. Made it back to a starport with 7% hull... only to get stuck in the cattle-grid and blow up

you were flying an angry space cow.
It's mainly that you spend time mining 50t of bromellite and you have... 50t of bromellite. Ok, you're in an icy ring so you start thinking void opals or diamonds, but you're likely in a bromellite hotspot to get it done. Pretty much nothing there will be worth much. Even bromellite isn't particularly valuable.
With painite mining, you've got something which in itself is worth mining and all the other valuable stuff (platinum, palladium, etc.) around it.
However, we are talking about access to G5 plasma accelerator engineering, so I'd have mined water if that's what was needed.
Ah, I see. 50t isn't that much to mine though, so I'm not too worried about profits on that. 500t wasn't as bad as I thought it would be when I was unlocking Selene Jean, just three trips in my Python. 5000ly for Professor Palin is the one I'm really dreading. Exploration seems even less appealing to me than mining, and it's going to take ages to get that far.

Yeah but, these days, if you're gonna do it you might as well do it in a double-painite hotspot and earn ~Cr400m in the process... and have the 10T of painite she needs immediately to hand afterwards.
For my alt-account I bought an unengineered T9 and within half a dozen hours I'd unlocked SJ and hit Trade Elite, thus ulocking access to Lori Jameson too... as well as pocketing half a billion credits in the process.
500 tons mining no problem. Provide 10 tons of Panite is the problem. It requires mining experience to figure out how to get it. The Frontier Devs designed the engineering requirements to get players to take on challenges they would not normally do. Thus they are better players and feel more accomplished in the game. Darn those Devs!
