Newcomer / Intro self destruct

I keep reading about commanders saying they self destruct when way out in the black. Surely you lose everything like exploration data if you do this, plus where do you respawn. I am very confused please help.

Yes you lose all your exploration data.

If you do an insurance rebuy you find yourself in the last station you docked at (EDIT - but see post #5)).

If you pick the free sidewinder you find yourself in your starting location or Farkas Dock in AY Indi if you started in the Pilot's Federation Administration newcomer's zone.

As to the why ... I think a lot of explorers are enticed out into the black without considering that every light year they travel onwards is a light year they will need to travel back as well. On the way out the lure of the destination (whether that be Sagittarius A*, Colonia, Beagle Point, the top of the galaxy or some other distant goal) draws you on. But once you're there the thought of the return journey (with no alluring new goal other than to simply "get back") can be very daunting. I know when I did my run to Sagittarius A* I barely considered the return journey and when I came to it I was like "oh god ... and now I have to travel ALL the way back again" For some, by this point the allure of long distance travel has gone and they just want to end it ... by the quickest means possible, even if that means loss of data.

I bet he's grinding engineers and people suggest exploding back from 5k for Palin, because at that stage in the game 5k is a long way ;)

Is it still last station? Thought they changed it to closest, but I haven't done it in years so can't be sure.
Last station - unless there is a station in the current system - then you spawn there.

Assuming that it has a landing pad that will take your ship and the controlling faction aren't hostile to you.

Many thanks all, it is as I thought then, on the way to Beagle point I crashed three times and went all the way back to the bubble, the last time I had had enough and made do with Sag A, I was dreadfully disappointed though.

I'll be honest, I haven't tested, but is that true?

Aside from inability to request docking, there's nothing which prevents you being on board (and leaving) a hostile station (or using any of it's services). i.e if you're on board the station, there's no change in functionality regardless of if you're Hostile or Allied.

e.g

Note: The red is just genuinely unavailable services due to state of repair, fuel etc.

EDIT: Follow-up, you'll respawn in a detention center, even though you don't have fines, when hostile. Good to know

I thought the deciding factor was whether it had a shipyard. I may have to test that too now (checked the respawn place for the Johnny-come-lately noob-zone starters and station in current system but that had a shipyard).

P.S. I am SOOOOOOO glad I learned about the fact of taking a freewinder not producing an insurance claim - no more re-qualifying Engineers with iron-man, gone plastic now.

Sorry for the necro here but I was wondering about the cost of self desrtruct.

Do you lose any of the manufactured materials and encoded data that is on the ship if you have to self destruct? Not the exploration data, that is a given. Or taken I suppose lol.

The normal inventory I understand will get destroyed but it is the stuff you collect for engineering that I really don't want to lose.
