self intro and a question to ponder

hi im shotgun an old timer pre ordered prem. beta hopefully ill get involved on here to get an elite fix of some description. When the game comes out ill be happy as larry , glass of whiskey game on , ill be livin the dream. single player multi as long as im amongst the stars i aint gonna worry a jot.
here`s the question though my son asked it me, what is multi player gonna do to keep people hooked, get people to buy (metaphorically) in to the game and keep playing. what different facets will it have thanks for your time:smilie:

I guess speaking as one 'old timer' to another... How many times were you playing Elite and you made up that the NPCs were actually your friends? In Dangerous they will be.

Welcome Shotgun!
As for keeping hooked, I hope they don't go the WoW themepark route (Just adding more of the same old in new packaging to keep you playing the same game mechanics).

The planned expansions include walking around your ship, space stations, boarding other ship or entering derelict ships to explore. Maybe repairing your ship after a fight :p Same with landing on planets, stuff like exploring, mining on planet, spying in busy cities, possibly first person shooter stuff (see their cancelled game of the outsider) and big game hunting. So ideally you'll get more and more complex gameplay instead of content.

smoke me a kipper ill be back for breakfast

that sounds very extravagant, all ill need is whiskey and a cockpit , youth of today dont know they`re born
(theme park he he i played that

I found that WoW dumbed down the "same old" routine to the extent that a child of 5 could do it. I sure hope FD don't go that route.

The planned expansions look huge. I can see ED evolving into a real time-hog. I'm growing eager to see the first iteration.

Hi Shotgun, welcome aboard. I am another wrinkled oldie, I was out of my teens when I played the original Elite.

I would give your son the same message I gave my sons. Watch your six son, because that's where I will be and the first thing you will hear is your shields going down.

If that's not a reason to play multi player I don't know what is.

Their response - In your dreams dad!

We will see- I was Elite before and the reflexes might not be as good and the arthritis a pain but the competitive spirit hasn't died yet.

Hi Shotgun, another old fart here, I played Elite when I was 14, been hooked ever since.

As to your son's question, from what I gather, the online galaxy will be an ever-evolving place. We will have major events injected by Frontier (like the Federation moving into a new system and beginning colonisation) and all the impact that will have on the other factions (Empire and Alliance) responding to that event. The player will then influence the course of these events by choosing which side or sides to support in the way of doing various missions. Player interaction with the online galaxy will influence the way things play out. These types of events are intended to provide new opportunities and threats to players, and the great thing is we will never know what is coming next. Every time we log on, there should be a sense of apprehension as to what we may encounter next. I don't know when Frontier intend to start initiating these galactic events, but I would expect something before the first expansion.

As the various expansions come out, the variety of stuff to do will also increase. I am particularly interested in ship boarding and seeing how that may work, whether a hostile attack on an enemy ship, or exploring a seemingly abandoned wreck.

I foresee this game expanding and gaining more and more depth for years - as DB has said so himself.

Hey Shotgun,

back in the day when I was playing Elite on my C64 with a friend we were thinking about how cool it would be if we could fly together and be pirates.
It took around 20 years to make that dream come true.
If the universe is only half the size of the original, even if there is only one galaxy in instead of, I think it was eight back then, then you will have a lot of exploring to do. Enough for a lifetime I'm sure.

(I can still remember sitting outside at night with my friend looking up to the clear sky wondering if there are Cobras, Vipers and Pythons flying around up there in some distant galaxy. Those were some great times, man. Mr. Braben had my mind sparked back then big time.)

I'd say you can't go wrong with Elite Dangerous. Even if they **** up completely. Which they won't.

Welcome to the stars old timer! ;)

Welcome to you Shotgun, as for your question, with a galaxy that has millions of star systems, anything could happen. Who knows for sure what you could find out there or perhaps "something" may find you. ;)

Have fun in the forums.

thanks for the welcome

Thanks every one,in hyped now. Cant wait for prem beta, wife will beat me for a while, worthwhile once in strapped in the cockpit

I'm another that played the original Elite as a teenager.

In answer to your question, I think the main thing to bear in mind is that Elite: Dangerous will be a "sandbox" game in which you are very much free to set your own goals, rather than work towards a predefined endgame. Also, as others have pointed out the background in Elite: Dangerous will not remain static, but will evolve in response to the actions of players. This thread http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6305 in the DDA gives a flavour of how this will work. Thus, whatever goals you set you may find that the goalposts are moving and, of course, you may find yourself redefining your goals in response to unfolding events.

Welcome Mr Shotgun Sir!

The DDF link above is good in fact all of the DDF is worth reading and reading it will show you how great this game will be. The thought and community consideration from the dev team is to my mind beyond all ive seen in any game.

good choice!

An excellent post

When we see the wealth of gameplay in the base game (reading the DDF), one can imagine over the years, the hallucinating adventure that awaits us
