Sell me a Cobra ?

I am looking for opinions from pilots who have had both an Eagle and a a Cobra.

It took me a while to get used to the Eagle after a SW and tbh for a couple of days I would have given it back ! Now that I have got used to it I love it's acceleration, manoeuvrability and hitting power but I am seriously thinking of trying out a Cobra in Beta 2. So, any pros, cons, opinions and fit out tips for the MK III would be appreciated.

The cobra is a jack of all trades, and was the only ship available to the player in the first game. The ED cobra has 2 class 4 + 2 class 2 hard points, tougher armour and shields than the eagle, and 36 tons of cargo space.

Actually in the original you started in a mark ONE cobra and the mark 3 was available to buy and fly as were a number of other ships.

There never was such a thing as a mark 2 cobra it went straight from 1 to 3

That's news to me. In FE2 and FFE you could replace the ship you started with, though I don't remember any of the starting positions being a MkI Cobra (I could be misremembering though).

In the original Elite, on all the versions I've played (BBC, Spectrum, C64, Amstrad, Amiga, Atari ST, PC - also played Elite+ on that), you had a MkIII Cobra and that was it.

You're right about the MkII never making it to market though, there was what I'll just call a "thermal issue" with the material used in the hull plating.

No, that is completely false in the original you flew a Mk 3 Cobra for the entire game there was no option to change ship, only upgrade the ship you had.

As soon as I read this I thought "oh yes, I remember that". So why does this sound familiar to me as well if everyone else thinks different?

The Cobra is bigger so watch out while docking and undocking. Right now the best load out would be two class 3 gimbaled pulse lasers, and two class 1s.
It is not nearly as maneuverable as the Eagle or sidewinder so in combat you will need to joust with it.

Sounds like a boom and zoom type to me. I know in speed it tops out higher than the Eagle but what is the acceleration like in comparison ?

You had to upgrade the cargo space from 20t to 35t with the cargo bay expansion in the original. In Frontier/FFE you could buy the Mark I (60t 'space') vs. the Mk III (80t 'space'). Perhaps this is what you are remembering?

It's a lovely ship. More challenging to fly than the Sidewinder or the Eagle, but fast as anything. Rolls like the devil itself, so in some ways ir's more agile than one would thing. Still, you need to get crafty with your flying to dogfight sideys and eagles if they get close. Good fun.

The cobra is a little faster in top speed but much less maneuverable than the Eagle. This makes it better for fighting at a distance when up against more nimble opponents rather than up close. It has excellent firepower so the key to combat is keeping guns on your opponent. You really need to learn to use the maneuvering thrusters proficiently in combat.

For Trading the Cobra is way ahead of the Eagle with 36 tons cargo capacity rather than 4. You'll never make any money as a trader in an Eagle or Sidewinder.

Basically the Cobra is my favorite all-around ship, but it does take some skill to survive with in combat. If all I wanted to do was combat I'd stick with the Eagle. But I'm very happy in my cobra right now :)

No. It was a Cobra MK3. Definitely.

You couldn't buy any other ships either. Definitely.

There was a Cobra MK2, but it was recalled due to safety concerns.

Aha, found them.

[Blows dust off Elite and Elite II manuals]

[Clears throat]

According to the manual, in the original Elite you have a Cobra mkIII

However, in Frontier, according to the congratulatory letter on page i from Faulcon De Lacy, you start with an Eagle long range fighter.

I can't actually remember what I started in but dem's the rules.

To confine yourself to one ship and to not experiment and try each ship you can during testing (prior to final reset) is doing yourself a disservice.
Each ship has it's own uniqueness and idiosyncrasies such as landing, flight mechanics and combat. Upgrading ships means flying multiple types as you work your way up the 'ship chain'. Flying as many as you can as much as you can only affords you comfortable familiarity when the game passes testing and the final credit reset occurs.
