Hardware & Technical Sell me some headphones

I have never liked wearing headphones. I don't like the feeling of them pressing on the sides of my head or my ears getting hot under them.
I play on 2.1ch speakers on my desk, and have been for years.
But I'm awaiting my Pimax 8k probably in a few months time, and I just ordered a Buttkicker Gamer 2 for my chair, and I think that with those items, a headset works better than speakers.
I'm not a super audiophile, but I do like decent quality sound, but more important than that, is the comfort factor.
I avoid wireless things where I can help it, so unless you have a good case for that, don't suggest wireless ones.
I am willing to pay up to ~$150AUD. I'd prefer something closer to the $100 mark, but I just don't know about these things.
So, please give me your advice.

I'm using these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0042A68R8/. Very comfortable, even after playing for a couple of hourse. Sound is also great, especially with the DTS option. But then I'm also not an audiophile. ;)

But I think there should be a newer model, as they're 3 years old and I paid less then 100€ for them.

There are loads of good gaming headsets. Senheiser do a great range, and more recently Razer. I'm not so keen on the SoundBlaster range. But for comfort, and if you don't need a microphone, a decent pair of audio headphones are much better. I use a Bowers & Wilkins P3, which is a small over-ear headset, much less sweaty than most gaming headsets, and less restrictive. Needs an extension cable though.

I have Senheiser - cloth covered

Anything other than a decent cloth covering seems to make me sweat and itch around my ears and force me to take them off quickly.

I don't recall the model I have and I'm not home at present, but Senheiser makes good stuff if you can find what you want in your price range.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.
I'm actually house-sitting for my friend at the moment. He has a steelseries wireless pair that seem fairly comfortable, just a little tight maybe. Anyone have any experience with that brand?

I know Senheiser is a quality maker, but the Gamer One costs $230AUD here, which is just too much for headphones imo.

I've never heard anything about Hyperx before, but I'll consider them.

I used to be into Razer stuff but I eventually found them to be all style, little substance. Are their headphones different?

Nobody's mentioned Logitech, I take it their headphones aren't very good.

Question: surround sound headphones or stereo?
I'm leaning towards stereo, but tell my if and why you think otherwise.
Primary use is with Elite Dangerous, and I do like to blast music while I'm bounty hunting.

My regular tech shop has several Audio-technica phones in my price range. I'm looking at the m40x which is $130, any opinions on that?

I prefer not to wear cans either but sometimes one must. I decided on these a while back:

HyperX Cloud II - seem to be about Au$120 (?)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperX-Cloud-Gaming-Headset-Mobile/dp/B00SAYCXWG/

Probably the most comfortable I have ever worn and I wore headsets professionally for years.

Hi Commander
I can also vouch for these cans as I have actually dumped my Sennheisers for these, so from that info any audiophiles will recognise that I'm NOT one!*
The HyperX "Gamers" are real good!!!!

*Sustained gunfire often without ear-defenders has put paid to the finer points of my hearing.

AKG K272HD. Had them for more years than I'd care to admit :) Unbelievably comfy. They look big, but wearing them is like having two tiny feathers hugging your ears.
Sound will definitely be polarizing. Some might hate it, I love it. It's got a flat frequency response, without any big noticeable humps or dips. They work great as monitors, but what really sells me on this kind of flat-response drivers is how great they work with equalizers.
Would I recommend them to somebody? Probably not :) But I think they are a great pair, perhaps with slightly more niche use than many other multimedia focused headphones.

Nothing in your price range comes to mind. I love my AKG K271 with velour pads (avoid the pleather ones, I think current models come with a pair of each), but they're very much monitor headphones that want to be driven by a decent preamp and let you hear every single issue the programme may have.

Since you're sensitive to pressure, make sure you try before you buy. I went through the entire Sennheiser lineup and every one of those was uncomfortable or even painful within a minute, the AKG was love on first touch; I've talked to people who had the exact opposite experience.

A major problem with headphones for me is that they isolate you from the sounds of the rest of the world around you. I know that for some people that is the whole point but not for me. I don't want to be pulling headphones on and off whenever my wife or kids come into the room and ask a question or make a comment.

Recently I've begun using Trekz Titanium headphones by Aftershocks. Nothing goes over or inside your ears at all. Sound is delivered via bone conduction so I can hear the game perfectly and still pick up noise in my environment. Very lightweight. I often forget that I'm wearing them.

very interesting, linky???

I'd personally suggest some stereo cans by brands like Audio Technica or Sennheiser. They will sound better than faux 7.1, I promise. If you have software that can do the processing for it on your PC, sure, but don't waste cash on those features on the headphones.

I am a little bit of an audiophile and I've been using the same model of Sennheiser headphones for the last seven years. They are excellent headphones for both listening to music and playing games. Elite Dangerous sounds great on them (ok I'm playing on an X-Box One S and the video and sound is processed by a home cinema amp.

Sennheiser and AKG are flat and detailed too

Another vote for the HyperX Cloud II from me. Very comfy, great sound, and come with a good quality detachable mic too.

You could also consider a 5.1 surround with a sub. They can be very unobtrusive yet immersive.
Since the Xbox connect with an HMDI, use a 4K UHD LED tv which usually always has an optical out digital audio to plug into home theatre setup :D

orrrr:

AURA ROG Gaming !

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I think I will try some HyperX Revolvers - from my research they are slightly better sounding than the Cloud 2s, and funnily enough my PC store is selling them for $20 less, making the price very right.
Plus I don't like the Cloud 2's styling, the Revolver is... less bad.

Damn! I made the mistake of going to Creative's website to see if they still sell mine. They don't, but now I want a new 7.1 so bad it hurts! [haha] https://uk.creative.com/p/gaming-headsets/sound-blasterx-h7-tournament-edition

I recently set a Logitech 5.1 Surround system up around my rig*, so these days my old Creative headset only comes out when I wing up and need a boom mike. It's comfortable, the sound is great and the microphone seems to work fine- I've never listened to the other end, obviously, but my pals don't complain when I use it! It's seen some pretty heavy use, it's over six years old now and it still looks and sounds brand new. I've never had to buy another one, so while I'm assuming that rivals are probably good, if and when I ever buy another headset, it'll be a Creative one.

*The 5.1 was the last stock at the end of the line, an absolute bargain price, had great reviews and I'd been looking at it for over a year... and it still took a stiff pep talk from my long haired Admiral to persuade me to buy it! The headset was doing fine and I had a couple of small Logitech speakers for web browsing. Why fix what's not broken? ;)
