General / Off-Topic Selling a used car (in UK)

Hi. Bit of a Random one!.

My wife wants to sell her car, and it turns out the v5 is still in her maiden name. Is this a problem and if not should she sign it off as her maiden name which matches the v5 or her real one?.

We do not really have the time to send off the v5 to be updated :(

Thanks

From a practical point of view it's easiest if she just signs in her maiden name.

May be useful to show any purchaser your marriage certificate to allay fears the car has been stolen (if they ask).

Thanks Yaffle. This is pretty much what I thought, but just making sure she would not be committing an offence!.

@guido...... good ideas, but this is a cheap car so not really worth it. if it does not sell I will just knock £50 off the price. hopefully someone will take it.

Had it been my Zed and was being sold for proper money, I would certainly have considered your advice. Thanks.

I have practically every receipt for every service, MOT and work done on the car, so that may help.

BTW if anyone near Cambridge UK wants a cheap reliable runaround, you can have our punto (and if you buy it as a thankyou you can have a demo on my oculus rift DK2) ;)

As Yaffle mentions supporting documentation always helps.

Possibly see about getting a car check done for the potential buyers, so you have all the relevant details plus a recognised check.

Legally you can use whatever name you like providing it's not for fraudulent purposes however it is supposed to be correct on legal documents, in this case as you are selling i seriously doubt there will be a problem but the police get really shirty about incorrect info on your license and on the V5 these days as almost everything they want to give you points for uses the information on them to track you down.

I have to point out though that as a regular second hand car seller/buyer, I always check names and addresses are correct and these days I'll ask to take a photo of the seller as well, got caught out once a few years ago and lost the car and my money.

I am possibly more distrusting than most people though. ;)

Yeah.... whilst I did not hound her on the V5 front, I did make sure she updated that. All being well the car has sold, pending payment. its from a guy at work and he has known my wife since before the wedding so there should be no trust issues.

so that is 1 less thing to stress about!.

thanks all for your info
