Selling Exploration Data in Colonia Region.

Hi All, :)

Just arrived in the Colonia System (under my own steam travelling in my DBX).
Okay, just a few questions.
I've got a load of exploration data going spare, just wondered if selling exploration data to any of the engineers in these systems will up my status with any of them. If so which ones?...(edit.. just had an after thought, or if they don't use expo data which factions would be best to sell the data to?)
I'll be kinda starting from scratch building up a few trading / combat vessels etc. whilst I'm here.
I'm currently at Jaques Station at the moment so I'll probably be buying a Python to start with.
I'm mostly grade 5 with engineers in the bubble, so I've already got some pinned modules, but I daresay I'll need some engineers here for adding experimental effects to some of the modules.
I don't do much on foot, so upgrades / modules will initially be more ship orientated to start with, so any general related advice welcome! (y)

Jack. :)

Hiya :D
Just dont cry if you explode before being able to sell the data...
aka... Is it worth it?
No worries, I 'Hopped' from the Bubble to here partly using the Colonia Bridge (sold data as I called in at a few stations along the way), so (just checked) I've got about 14,000,000 cr left from the last 'bridge' station to here. I was going to hand it in here at this station, but thought to ask the questions in my original post first.;)

Heya, Jack.

The best place I've found for information is INARA.

The Colonia ship engineers are Mel Brandon, Marsha Hicks, Petra Olmanova and Etienne Dorn. For personal engineers, you've got Rosa Dayette, Eleanor Bresa, Baltanos and Yi Shen.

To unlock all of them, you'll need to do the following:
  • As @SteveWW57 said, sell some exploration data to Colonia Council. This will get you an invite to Mel Brandon as well as unlock Baltanos, who requires you to be Friendly with that faction.
    • You'll need to provide Mel Brandon 100,000CR worth of bounty vouchers
    • You'll need to provide Baltanos with 10 Faction Associates data for the referral to Yi Shen
  • You should have enough exploration data to sell and get to 'Surveyor' rank. This will get you an invite from Marsha Hicks.
    • You'll need to mine 10 tons of Osmium
  • You'll need to be Expert in Combat to get an invite from Petra Olmanova. Getting those bounty vouchers for Mel Brandon should help, but there's going to be a short grind there. Keep in mind with Odyssey, on foot kills count towards your combat rank. So, when you're looking for stuff for the Odyssey engineers, you should get progress towards this requirement
    • Provider her with 200 Progenitor Cells
  • For Etienne Dorn, you'll need to be 'Dealer' or higher in trade.
    • Etienne Dorn is kind of a sicko - why does he want 25 Occupied Escape Pods? Well... probably don't want to know. But, you'll have to get him those.
  • For Eleanor Bresa, you'll have to visit 5 settlements in the Colonia system.
    • Provide 10 Digital Designs for referral to Yi Shen
  • For Rosa Dayette, you will need to sell a total of 10 Culinary Recipes and/or Cocktail Recipes to bartenders in Colonia.
    • Provide 10 Manufacturing Instructions for referral to Yi Shen
  • For Yi Shen, you just have to complete the referral requirements of all three of the other engineers
I unlocked all of the ship engineers last time I was in Colonia, and I'm heading out soon to unlock the personal engineers. If I were starting over, here's what I'd do:
  • Sell the exploration data to Colonia Council to get the invitations from Baltanos and Mel Brandon
    • Hopefully, this provides enough to get to 'Surveyor' rank to get an invitation from Marsha Hicks
  • If you don't have Culinary Recipes, Faction Associates, Manufacturing Instructions, Cocktail Recipes or Digital Designs, I'd start doing Odyssey missions to farm those.
    • This will get you the 'visit 5 settlements' requirement to get an invitation from Eleanor Bresa
    • This will also help you rank Combat to 'Expert'
    • Selling downloaded data and unneeded goods might help rank up in Trade to 'Dealer', but I'm not sure (I can't find anything on that, but if on-foot kills counts towards the Combat rank, it would make sense this would count towards Trade. But, who knows?)
  • Somewhere in there, I'd go mine the 10 tons of Osmium for Marsha Hicks and sell it to help with Trade rank
  • Also somewhere in there, I'd go and do some combat for Mel Brandon's bounty vouchers, also helping with Combat rank
  • Also somewhere in there, I'd make sure I had 200t of cargo space and buy up Progenitor Cells and get them to Petra Omanova once I have an invite from her
  • Also somewhere in there, you'll need to do some rescue missions and pick up Occupied Escape Pods for Etienne Dorn. Then, you can feel like a monster for giving these poor, hapless survivors to him

Regarding the Odyssey materials, my experience has been farming Cocktail and/or Culinary Recipes isn't that big of a grind (absolutely nothing compared to Opinion Polls, Smear Campaigns and Settlement Defence Plans). Faction Associates seemed to pop up pretty regularly for me, and both Digital Designs and Manufacturing Instructions can be picked up as mission rewards. So, the grind there isn't too bad.

Welcome to Colonia - hope you enjoy your stay!

Other than the rep requirement for the unlocks (which can also be obtained in other ways, of course) none of the engineers here accept exploration data (or any other side method) to boost rep, you have to engineer modules to get your rep up with the ship engineers. Of course, if you're unlocking them to engineer some new ships and modules, all this really means is that whatever you do first with them should be something you've got a decent bit of extra G1-3 materials for the first blueprint, and then after that you'll be at rep 5 anyway.

Material traders are at:
Colonia Dream - Ratraii (Data)
Foster Terminal - Coeus (Manufactured)
Tolagarf's Junkyard - Kojeara (Raws)

Almost all modules and all independent ship hulls are available in the region - mostly at the various stations in the Colonia system itself, though not with perfect reliability: a few of the larger A-rated modules you may have to wait a few weeks for stock to be available. https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/outfitting for a summary of regional availability

As regards factions to sell spare data to:
- if you don't want to get involved in the region's BGS even as a passer-by, sell it to any accepting station in the Colonia or Ratraii systems. Those systems are partially BGS-locked, and at any rate far too high traffic and stable for your sale to make any real difference. Lots of people sell to Jaques Station for sentimental reasons.
- if you do want to get involved, all of the other systems are controlled by a player-backed faction of some sort, who will mostly appreciate the contribution. The tourist guide in my signature also has some information about them and their history in the region, and most of them have other information published in the usual places.

It all depends on if you care about the BGS & particular Factions.
I didn't in previous visits, so I spread my data around going from one System to another, selling to become 'Allied' then moving on.
But if you're into the BGS & factions, then obviously becoming 'Allied' with them will bring you some advantages.....I struggle to get into that side of the game, even now!
All of my data got sold to my following FC, to help offset those weekly running costs;)

i stopped the engineers grind on my 2 alt accounts
i wait for Fdev's announcements about ship engineers rebalance
it might be more interesting to do missions for the engineers (if it is the future path to unlocking them)
