First off, five US dollars for a skin is ridiculous. Just had to say it.
Now if FD put out TEMPLATES for five dollars--selling various patterns and including a basic coloring suite in the starport--I'd be all over that.
Whether I'm playing around with car skins, soccer kits, football uniforms, logos, etc, I always use three particular color sets that feel unique to me. The galaxy would have a lot more personality if everyone were allowed to paint preset patterns the way they wanted. Because honestly, there will probably be so many blue sonorans out there that the value and point of buying the skin in the first place will go out the window. And I'm sure there will be at least one pirate out there who dresses his (her?) ship completely pink and gives everybody extra grief. Plus, it would promote a stronger clan mentality if everybody is flying in the same design that you simply couldn't buy in the store. Also, maybe just maybe it would add an element to being a pirate in that once your "heat" rises too much, you fly into a station and pay credits for a new paint job so you're not so easily recognizable.
I know some people will try to draw obscenities on their ship, but that's not what I'm asking for. Just several patterns and the ability to "paint bucket" several colors onto it how I want it.
Or even better, since I know the majority of people here are from the UK, look at Codemasters' work with GRID--you pick a base color, three additional colors, and then scroll through dozens of templates, mixing and matching Color 1, 2, and 3, until you find the pattern and color combination you like. Somebody from Frontier MUST know somebody from Codies, right???
For example:
I'd pay TWENTY dollars for that capability...although I'd prefer it be considered an "Expansion".
That said, I think more people would spend Ten dollars for that than five dollars for a single skin from a collection that surely won't suit the majority's taste.
Thoughts?
