Selling The Stars

Anybody tired with the game isn't going to be encouraged to stick around and pay extra money to have their fake name put on one of many billion stars. Paying more money simply is not an incentive to play the game more.

Ship kits and paint jobs are a little different. The player actually see them as they play the game. It is visually apparent. And it is fun to get some for multiple ships... so the player is attracted to maybe purchase several.

Paying money to have your name put on a star? Sorry, too close to IRL scams.

It occurred to me that one way of minimising the impact of player purchased populated systems would be restrict them to a region away from other human populations. A brand new bubble. They could unlock a permit locked region and allow them to be placed there and then they would all be undiscovered systems. The could give the discoverers options to buy.

I personally would prefer to be able to name stuff anywhere, but that would be a good compromise.

Howabout you have to be the descoverer of the system, have maped every planet, and logged every plant? Arx are fine, but you should know the "land" you claim.

Just realised this would have to be either already discovered systems or a hand picked collection of systems, otherwise the UI for naming bodies would be giving away the contents of unknown systems.

Seeing the names of ships and fleet carriers makes me much, much more afraid of this idea. Selling systems means making sure that someone will buy a system to "troll".

The player is assigned a random undiscovered system anywhere in the galaxy
I don't think this would be a good idea because you would be buying a pig in a poke, and it could be very disappointing. For example, it could just be an unremarkable brown dwarf with no other stellar bodies of any kind. For this to be in any way enticing, a player would need to be given some choice.

Of course players can't just be given the choice of "peek" at a random undiscovered system because that would be fraught with all kinds of problems and exploits.

I like the idea that in order to "buy" a system you would need to have fully discovered it yourself first. This way if you discover something spectacular (like a system containing a very unusual amount of unusual stellar bodies, or something extraordinarily rare like a green gas giant), you could "buy" the system and have it named as you wish (or other similar perks).

Yes I think that might be it. Or do it like monopoly. If you discover it you get the option to buy it. If it remains unsold for a periodof time then it can go up for auction.

Possibly, subject to checking, for the stations etc. Possibly not for the system name.

Only FDev know, maybe.

I'm really on the fence with this. I like the idea, because it's purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay mechanics in any way, it does not skip any gameplay either for money.

But on the other hand... After I've seen some ship and fleet carrier names - I am not so sure.
Same solution as my proposal for crests/logos; Frontier creates a forum where people submit their request that can only be responded to by moderator approved individuals. After a request gets, say, three, approvals, the final approval submits the request up to Frontier.
