Selling tritium to carriers - surely I'm missing something...

I have a cutter full of tritium, I'm in a system chock full of carriers, and I want to sell it to the one offering the highest price. How the hell do I find this out?

Nothing on the system map gives me any indication on what carriers are buying what. Ditto selecting a carrier from contacts in LH pane. If I select tritium from inventory in RH pane and click open galaxy map, the map opens filtered on tritium but no market information is available even for the current system.

I must be missing something. It can't be this bad. Can it?

Let me know if you figure this out. Yesterday I stumbled on a carrier purely by luck that was offering very good prices (better than anything within my one hop radius that I try to stick to), and I'd use carriers all the time if I could find ones like this easily. The only bad thing is that one T9 load of Tritium pretty much topped off this particular carrier, so you're not going to get that many runs out of a single carrier even if you do find a good price.

If you dock at a station, you can do a market comparison from there, and this may tell you about a carrier with the best Tritium price. Unfortunately this is a little slow and doesn't guarantee that they're still offering that price ... or are open for docking ... or have a demand >1t.

If the carriers want to buy your Tritium, then they should be called the "Buying Tritium 100k/tonne ABC-1ZZ" to get your attention.

Yes, it can indeed be exactly this bad.

I used EDDB, filtered stations and got a list of carriers as long as my arm. I was only looking to restock limpets but the OP is right, commerce is going to be tough with NO market tool to speak of.

Inara (eddb might work)
Surely, Inara is not infailible, but it will tell you how old is the info and even if the carrier is open to all

Nope, it's really that bad.

The third party sites like Inara and EDDB can't keep up with the rapidly changing carriers, and that's even if the owner uses EDMC or something, and many don't. And the game itself gives no help at all.

The only thing you can do right now is listen to chat for a while, and wait until someone advertises that their carrier is buying.

No it's not... i've sold like 22000 tons of Tritium in the LTD3 system based only on prices picked from Inara.
There were some duds, but most of the time it worked as expected.

Edit: Average profit: about 55-60k per ton

Last time I checked, Inara's info on Carrier docking permissions was borked. It reported my own as open for all, even though it's been restricted since just after I got it.

Though it might report sales made to the Carrier, which should be a good indication.

How do you check to confirm that your carrier is restricted ?

You can look at the prices of all carriers in the galaxy map.....go to galaxy map...select the filter for commodities, select tritium, select your system, and click through all markets including carriers.....then easily click below, to mark it as target and go for it....no problem to do it in game !? You can as well select import or export prices...

Inara & EDDB are often outdated and missing a lot of opportunties (showing only FCs where someone landed using a third party tool to update the information).

I made some tests yesterday. My FC is full of Tritium wanted to make some fast money.

I looked on Inara and located a FC buying 4000T for 83k / T and the information update was recent (less than 30 min). I went quickly in the system with my DBX (using it as a scout for my FC) and landed on the FC. Information was good, still 4000 T of Tritium for 83K. Requested my FC to jump at the same body.

My FC was only a 3.5 Mm from the other FC so took only a few short runs with my Type 9 and made 325 millions credits profit in an instant.

We should have access to a real-time FCs market for buy & sell orders...imagine the potential of player to player trading (we already see it with broken tools) if we had a decent tool to trade...

The in-game comparison tool works fine but :

  • is limited to 40 ly (If I'm right)
  • doesn't tell you the exact demand so you could land on a FC with a full T9 and realize that it only need 100T

It allowed me to spot in the same system a FC buying 1000T for 100k / T (that was not shown on Inara or EDDB) ... unfortunately, there was a bug not allowing me to sell Tritium (seen it a few time).

Player to player trading is full of potentialbut, as always, FDev delivered a half-baked feature.

FDev : Hey guys, we are so happy and excited to add player to player trading in the game !
Players : Nice ! With over 7000 FCs in game it'll be amazing ! How we'll we be able to find out where to sell or buy from FC ?
FDev : Hmm...thanks for your feedback ! We'll (not) ge tback to you as soon as we have an answer !

Result : FCs named "BUYING TRIT @100K" all over the galaxy and an underused feature.

Hope they come with some solution for this.

All carriers in the galaxy ? Isn't it limited to a maximum range from your location ? Does it write the quantity requested by the FC ?

Both no.....but with that massive number of carrier in every range, I always have lots of carriers nearby, buying that stuff....no need for increased range....

Thanks for suggestion, however I'd already tried that and no prices appeared, all I got was 'information unavailable' for the 40-odd carrier in the list

LOL. Three choices.

A) Dock on every FC in the system, all 140ish, note on a pad of paper which are open to docking, which have demand, and what price. Then figure out the best, and return to it, hopefully they wont be full up already.

B) Ask in chat who is buying and at what price / demand? Any Cmdrs present you give back details, or there may be fresh details in the chat from since you entered the system.

C) keep tabs on my INARA bullitin board advert, i update 2-3 daily, and will tell where i am, what i pay, and if buying or selling Tritium.

Yep, just sold 400t @58k - another carrier offered 65k but was scheduled to jump shortly so couldn't make it in time. Found it by filtering Tritium in the Galmap, and flick through the local export markets. I'm near the 3LTD so no local stations as such - I imagine having docked on my carrier (or someone else's) was all that was required to make the prices show (because that's all I did).

Was even half expecting 1t of demand or some other bait & switch but worked out ok.

What I wanna know is if l setup a buy order for 2000 tritium on my carrier am l forced to put a sell price on my existing stock of tritium on board?
Just a confusing interface.

That means, this carrier is not trading with that commodity!
Thanks. I know that's what it means (not intending to sound salty!), this was why I became so frustrated. It said that all 40-ish carriers in the system weren't buying. Three of those I then docked at, the third was buying tritium (for a low price) despite what the trade info said.

I have since decided **** it, offloaded the lot at a loss, and decided to abandon my high-falutin' ideals of getting enough money for a FC using in-game tools only.

Instead I'm going out to an LTD3 tonight with a fighter bay. If you can't beat 'em join 'em etc

EDIT: Thanks for everyone's input!
