Senior Citizen could use some help

Hello Everyone:
At my age (64) the desire to game is as strong as ever. I will not waste time with the pros and cons of E D as Frontier has released what I would call a decent foundation to build and improve the game from.
I have had a difficult time with learning some of the mechanics but thanks to the tutorials the learning curve has lessened. I can now fly my ship, nav all of the screens, dock decently most times.

Finally, today I completed my first simple mission and have a whopping 2,000 credits to my name (LOL). I am still lost with the market part of the game. Just looking at that screen gives me a headache, but I will learn it by review/tutorials etc.

Question: is there a way to park my save elsewhere in case my ship is blown up and have to start all over? If yes what is the file name and where is it located?
Many thanks in advance for any help offered.

Hello and Welcome. The save (of which there is only one) is stored on the server so you don't have too worry about it. This is deliberate by Frontier to prevent exploitation and cheating.

You have just one save and you need to make sure you always have enough credits to cover its insurance or you would have to start from scratch. Insurance amount for your current ship is displayed in the right panel (press 4 to see it). I think Frontier promised us 3 saves at some point but they will also be clowd-based meaning you can't make a backup, sadly. If you are concerned that things are going wrong for you it is now recommended to either quit to the main menu or just kill the game from the task manager. This is the "get me out of here" button for now :)

Every time you dock you effectively save the game. If you get blown up you will respawn at the last station you docked at, assuming you make sure you have enough credits in reserve to pay the insurance excess. You can't mess with the save via files, it's all done on the server.

Take your time to learn the game, it all comes together pretty fast (speaking as someone only a few years younger than you).

Greetings! Methinks you lie about your age, Mr. I'm-not-born-in-1874!

There's definitely a steep learning curve, but from the sounds of it's working out, the rest is just practice :) Unfortunately no, there isn't a way to keep your save, the game is played online so if you die, you die. Take a look in your status panel on the right, there you'll see the rebuy cost under your credits in case you die, it sits at 4% of the total cost of your ship (maybe 5% for current buyers, mine may be slightly discounted for being in beta), so if you explode, you'll have to pay that much to be able to repurchase your ship. It's a good rule of thumb to always keep this amount of credits spare, just incase the worst happens. Right now, don't worry, the sidewinder is free to rebuy, so you'll only have to pay for upgraded modules, but later on you'll want to do this, the forums are littered with people who flew without enough to cover it and lost *everything*.

As for the market, yeah, you'll pick it up as the game progresses, and it's not really of much use yet until you have a ship with a larger cargo capacity, but this infographic should help: http://i.imgur.com/QsxScn1.jpg

In terms of making credits, missions are a good way to get you started and used to the game. When you find they aren't paying out enough, you can pick up a mining laser and head to a resource extraction site, but bare in mind a lot of them are duds and you won't get much, have a look around for mining tutorials that will show you how to look for pristine metallic rings, but off the top of my head, I believe Frey was a fairly good system. You can also bounty hunt by heading to nav beacons and taking out wanted targets, make sure you let your systems scan them first to make sure they're wanted, else you'll pick up a bounty yourself! That's called piracy right there!

Welcome to E:D, and fly safe! Or dangerous, up to you ;)

You can always get the starter ship back for free. Other than that, it's a good idea to keep 50% extra of a new ships cost around to buy it back, which you can do at a big discount.

Dying isn't so punishing in this game as long as you have a reasonable amount of credits.
