Newcomer / Intro Sensors, any reason to upgrade?

What difference do the upgraded sensor packages make? Do they extend your sensor range in Supercruise, or just real space? Would buying a better sensor suite make it easier to find "black boxes" and "rebel transmissions"?

Thanks

I have not seen a reason to go beyond "D" modules, they are the lightest of the bunch. The range is only for normal space-flight, I think.

There is a assumtion that better sensors give more accuracy for gimballs on longer distances - and that is big advantage if it is true.

It's for combat pilots looking for an edge. If you're going for gimball gun mounts, if you need a bit more accuracy and range on detect (friggn cops just popped in on this fight, I'd better be more careful with my shots), etc... It's worth it.

Think of them as a few percent points edge in a fight. It's not a lot but the difference between collecting a bounty and "hmm.. where'd my cockpit go?" is often just a little bit.

ergo: Not worth a hell of a lot unless you're a scrapper type.

If you are into a lot of combat I highly recommend going with better sensors. The sooner you can spot your enemies AND the longer you can maintain a lock on them the better. Take me for example. I fly a Cobra and often take on missions to destroy pirate anacondas. My strategy is to attack and destroy their power unit first. In an Anaconda that particular subsystem is buried deep in the list of subsystems. The extra kilometer or two you gain in sensor range allows me to target the power unit well before the shooting starts so I am ready.

upgraded sensor can increase their range so you can see ships before they see you and they can reduce the energy consumed. They do not help find black boxes etc.

Unfortunately, the game hides information from us anywhere it can. Shield strength? Intangible. Interdiction modules? Guesses. Sometimes I can happily interdict from >100Ls away, then I'm 10Mms on a bandit's six, yet my interdicton module is apparently out of range, so I'm left scratching my head. At least with fuel scoops we get the benefits shoved right into our faces.

I'm not exactly sure what range my sensors have, but I do know for sure that it is a lot farther than my weapons range (another figure missing in the outfitting menu) and anything beyond that is a luxury, imo.

I upgrade my scanners fully. The base scanner is useless for identifying targets until you're practically on top of them. Even trading, I want to see threats show up sooner rather than later. Want to see how different they are? Fly with base scanners, and fly side by side with another commander with good sensors. See how much faster they are able to see ships and ID them, and you'll be sold.
