Sensors: Why does nobody zoom them out?

Correct me if I'm wrong, you can also set your sensors to one of two settings; relative and absolute?

So, in relative if you have some contacts, one distant, the others close... your sensor panel will adapt somewhat to it such that all the close ones will appear close, and the distant one at the very edge, but if that distant one disappears, all the close ones spread out to fill?

In absolute... the sensor rings have a static meaning, and so they won't expand-to-fill.
Linear & Logarithmic, yes.
I had to remember where the control was, been a while since I changed it!

Doesn't it zoom automatically? I've never bothered with this setting.

The "automatic zoom" is only in supercruise where the scanner adjusts the "zoom" / scale so that what you have targetted is shown at a distance related to the time it would take to travel to it. I don't think the scale changes in normal space with whatever you target.

I have a personal habit. Whenever I first load into the cockpit and take off, as I'm going up and retracting my landing gear, I hit Page Up 3x. I just do that at the beginning of each session, then leave it.
Ditto. Why the game can remember HUD brightness levels, pips & turret firing mode but never this?
🙄 Even galmap filters sometimes have a go at remembering themselves between sessions!

Its most useful zoomed in most of the time, but i have an analogue axis i use to change the zoom level when i want to get the wider view.
