Separate jetpack button?

Everytime I slide of a mountain, I can't boost the jetpack, because technically I still got the feet on the ground. But I can't jump eighter because actually I am falling.
This causes me to slide from the very top to the very bottom without being able to do anything.

So how can we solve this?

Run sideways along the slope, that often frees up the jump button so you can jump and boost.

Yes. It is basicly a doublejump button. You need to be in the air to activate the jetpack. Since sliding off the mountain is technically still surface contact, you can neighter jump nor activate the jetpack to stop the fall.
It is extremely frustrating.
I have no idea if it can be considered as a bug or a design flaw.

It's helped me sometimes, running sideways will sometimes stop you sliding down, then you can jump, but not in all situations I suppose.
Or none in my situations. It only works if you can hit a ledge. Then you are officially landed.
But when there is no ledge, you should be also able to activate the jetpack.

But it should shoot you off sideways, perpendicular to the slope.

If you want to use jetpack to progress UP a slope then you should need proper handholds, and climbing technique, imo.

I am a fan of bindings for all things reasonably bindable. There is no reason jumping and activating your jetpack shouldn't be separate binds.

Well . . . perhaps . . . shudder . . . console controllers 😱

Find a rock to stop your descent?

I guess a seperate button would be the way to go .. but then again should jetpacks be infallible?
Or should falling off a cliff - unless using jetpack in a controlled manner - be a thing?

In other words I personally don't find it too terrible that you can fall over.

Well there are no rocks.
And sliding down is a matter of seconds.

It makes no sense that jetpacks cannot be activated while standing. Why shouldnt it work?

And yes, it bothers me. I spend time to get up there. And I cant really climb, that is also a problem. So yes, sliding down sucks when the only tools given to me are not working in this situation.

It is like: Hey you spend 6 hours to manage the glacier field Mr Mountaineer, but if you slip you will be back at the start(or dead) because dou are not able to move your hands to get the pickaxe into the snow to stop your slide. Why? Because the pickaxe can only be activated while walking.

Yeah. I get it. It's just I think it's intresting to explore the mechanic. Before changing it (which migh have repercussions in other places in the game) how does jump/boosting from rock to rock work, as a climbing tactic?

Obviosuly boost isn't working if you just try to run up the slope but maybe there are ways to use it if you pick your route, plan your climb and even accept some climbs are either not possible or extremely difficult to make.

Easy jetpecking defeats the slope but cutting out the possibility of climbing competitions MIGHT defeat the game??

Makes no difference.
For getting up you dont need a foothold to boost. And it works quite well with just the jetpack. If you get onna ledge you stand. No problem eighter. But if you start to slide you are arsed. You can only hope for a ledge in any direction.
No luck most of the time. And all the time you got a fully charged jetpack that you cant activate.

Well if there were enough ledges...
That would be a different story. I would not use the jetpack at all.

Yeah, you're slipping .. but you COULD (suggesting) look down and move sideways, across the slope, to catch a rock or ledge.

You slipped, almost fell .. but saved yourself?

edit: I think there's a difference between a pack that can assist a jump (which we have) and a full on flying machine (which we don't)?

You know the Odyssey Mountains? They all look like Gauss curves.
You dont hit hard at the bottom. And there are too few visible ledges to catch them.

Second part Im not sure I understand.
