Elite / Frontier Seriously - why no Elite release for mobile devices?

I always wondered why LucasArts (back in the day) didn't do a star wars based one.

I had some of the best fun on the X-Wing series, all great games of their time, with some of the best space combat i've played ... small ships, capital ships...

Sadly though, all mission based, if you had an updated version of those games bolted on to a free form 'galaxy' where you could explore, trade, etc ... wow!

Star Wars Galaxies. A complex, freeform, sandbox MMO, would you believe. Sadly destroyed a number of years ago.

Unfortunately I missed out on SWG, but I have heard that although fondly remembered, it was deeply flawed before then being finally destroyed by an unpopular update.

There were bugs and imbalances, but "deeply flawed" is not fair. It contained elements that have never been attempted before or after, including properly persistant player cities (i.e. you actually plan and create your city in the gameworld, not in an instance like all the others do), an incredibly complex and rewarding crafting system and a career system that allowed you to create truly unique character types.

There will always be bugs and imbalances in MMOs, but proper depth and a player-run economy/architecture is what really counts.

Hi!

I work at a computer and games mag company, and I know so many people who would BURST with delight at Elite (or especially Frontier) on mobile devices. Space romps such as Galaxy on Fire are really popular, and yet feel so primitive compared to the planet-landing gigantic-universe mega-freedom setup of Frontier.

It just boggles my mind that Frontier Developments hasn't done something for the iPad. Even a port of the original Frontier would be so well received! Tart the graphics up a bit, tune the controls for touch, and you have the biggest, most technically impressive space exploration game out there. Even a quick GLFrontier-like port would be great.

David Braben is mad. The coolest guy on the planet by far, and an incomprehensibly good programmer, but he's clearly totally oo. JUST MAKE US AN IPAD VERSION!

There's some talanted peeps here, can't some of them club together and make some kind of Flash anim neurolizer to wipe all memories of Elite so we can just get on with our lives? I bet DB could do that with like three lines of code, but he won't cos he gets a kick out of our indefatigable begging. It fuels and sustains his cutesy-toys obsession, knowing that each new release is ever-further removed from any semblance of anything to do with a space sim, a man whose whole corporate strategy is motivated by nothing more than sheer schadenfreude at our slavish credulousness, he probably runs over pigeons too. Mind i hit a fox the other night, thing just darted out on me, nowt i could do.. tsk..

Rockstar? NO WAY.
When they made GTA San Andreas, a game that worked on the consoles, they botched the PC version. Only now, with Win7 does GTA SA work the way it should.

Did Rockstar learn from the mistakes of a PC version of GTA SA? Nope.
They made GTA IV which also could not be played on PC when released.
I vowed then to never ever buy another Rockstar PC game.

So who do I recommend? You may not like it but I recommend (and I am baffled why no-one has mentioned them) These Guys
And let's face it, they ARE making a space trading/combat sim sequel, so they obviously think there is a market for it.

And if you don't agree they should do it, why not These guys instead considering their track record, why not?

But please please please .... not Rockstar

Gimmie that ship!

Granted, the GTA games were not perfect, but one thing they did achieve was the creation of a living breathing city. Talk about the creation of a new Elite game tends to concentrate on what happens above the atmosphere.

Thats all well and good, however it would also be nice to see starports which are alive and bustling with activity with their own stories too. After all, if you are going to go to all the bother of creating planets that you can actually land on, why not give them a bigger role in the game? Make them that much more interesting?

Of course this would only be a small part of what I would like to see in a new Elite game. I have to shamefully admit though that the concept of "Grand Theft Cobra" does appeal to the hooligan side of my nature

Speaking of the X games, didn't X2 start with a ship theft?

Rather than getting an iPad you could all just get an Android device and play it on that... Here's me running FE2 on my ASUS Transformer - it's a little laggy at times but otherwise playable... kinda :D

Yeah dos version. Although if I'm being completely honest I need to figure out the mouse emulation and the key mapping but it runs :D More than I can say for any Apple device.

More than I can say for any Apple device.

I had Frontier running via iDOS on the iPad, but without a physical keyboard and mouse it wasn't really usable.

That shouldn't stop Braben considering it though -- the NES version of Elite and CD32 version of Frontier show such games are possible with restricted/different controls. JUST DO IT DAVID!

Rage over :)
