So many ships named after snakes. Could it be the programmer tasked with naming ships has an affinity for snakes?

The Sidewinder, Cobra, Asp, Python and Anaconda are all legacy ships from the original 1984 Elite (when virtually all the ships had snake-derived names), and those ships still look much the same as they did then. The Adder and Fer-de-Lance were also 1984-era ships but have been given a makeover in ED to make them look more space-plane-like. The Diamondback is the only snake-ship that's new to ED.

When the Diamondback ships were released I remember thinking it was well named because the ships look like an insect with wings folded back (eg a moth, diamondback moths are common in the UK) but that the name was also a good fit with the other snake/reptile names.
You can see it so it can't be a phantom.
And also a sweet water snake and a Bicycle brand.A lot of them come from the original game on the BBC (in 1984). I think maybe the triangular shapes look like snake heads.
