Setting bounties on other players?

Unfortunately the game's bounty system is simply too harsh to allow for this to happen, with stations blowing wanted people up etc.
The only way to get around people trolling, or just being mean is by pumping up the minimum bounty to something like 100k. But then that just means the rich can easily bully.

There was a plan for this in the DDA archive, where a player could place a bounty on another player's head. There were some strict limits to prevent abuse. It could only be done immediately after a player's ship was killed, within a narrow time window after arriving back at the station. The player had to have enough cash in the bank to afford it, and there would be limits on how high the bounty could be.

No idea if this will ever show up in the game, but if you want to read about it, check this link and scroll down to "Pilot Federation Bounties":

Sounds like that would be fun and could also deter some pirates from blowing you up for no reason. However I would still like to set a bounty on who ever I want. So lets say A pirate makes me jet some cargo. I am all upset and decide that he deserves to die :)

It wasn't long ago i heard Braben mention this as an upcoming feature in an interview. Stations etc. wouldn't be a problem as these would be contract killer missions outside the legal system. On the contrary, the legal system would help lower the risk of law abiding targets getting hunted as killing them would render the killer wanted and becoming a target themselves.
These kinds of missions are already in the game with NPC contractors and targets, there are missions for hunting both innocent targets and outlaws and killing innocents will make you a criminal while killing outlaws will reward you with additional bounties.
I can't see any problems with this system.

Yeah, I understand the motivation. :)

The trouble is in all the gray areas where people might get P.O.'d at each other, both in and out of the game (including forums), where it could turn into just harassment.

With the game mechanic described in the DDA, the game doesn't have to know or care about motivations. It would only be available in one special case, where Player A scores a kill on Player B's ship, and Player B has a limited recourse to set a bounty right after that happens. So if you wanted a bounty on that pirate (or anyone else), you have to entice them to kill your ship first.
;)

it should be a bounty that is only claimable by a real player and not be wiped through any kind of NPC interactivity and the person with the bounty should not be able to pay it off in in station as you currently can (which is crap imo as kills the PVP bounty hunter aspect). this way the bounty will accrue over time either forcing players to change their nefarious ways or just be totally bad ass :)

Not into this idea at all, why do players want to be so powerful in Elite? Is it because other games allow players in games to feel like mini gods? Well that's not the case in Elite you are a tiny insignificant speck in a massive Galaxy get used to it;)

The powers that exist in game place bounties and that's fine. This would just lead to harassment and player griefing imo.

Problem with Frontier's proposed system is that it could be farmed.

Lets say I find myself with a substantial bounty on my head. I buy a sidewinder, get a buddy to shoot me down, collect the reward, then dump a portion of it as precious metals for me. Both me and my buddy have profited from my crime, while my victims who have contributed to the bounty have lost.

You can already do this, just not very easily, unless you resort to out of game tools.

I don't think the game should distinguish between PC and NPC activity.

.

You have to pay off your bounty on death to the tune of 1.5X the amount tho ;) That is how they avoid the exploit and ofc it makes perfect sense just like how a criminal has to pay off their court costs and fines irl or go to jail. We don't have a jail function in Elite tho so you pay or lose everything.

I would be happy to put a 4 million bounty on myself just so people will come after me then if I die I could just pay myself.

Losing everything can still mean losing a lot less than the bounty figure, in some cases. If someone is explicitly trying to exploit the bounty feature, they will just accrue the biggest bounties possible, liquidate all assets, get killed, then reset the account and repeat.

Yea i understand that but who would seriously play the game like this and never advance? They would be a very altruistic person to give their friends lots of credits but never gain any themselves ;)
