That would be a neat feature. Would love to see player generated missions.
There was a plan for this in the DDA archive, where a player could place a bounty on another player's head. There were some strict limits to prevent abuse. It could only be done immediately after a player's ship was killed, within a narrow time window after arriving back at the station. The player had to have enough cash in the bank to afford it, and there would be limits on how high the bounty could be.
No idea if this will ever show up in the game, but if you want to read about it, check this link and scroll down to "Pilot Federation Bounties":

Sounds like that would be fun and could also deter some pirates from blowing you up for no reason. However I would still like to set a bounty on who ever I want. So lets say A pirate makes me jet some cargo. I am all upset and decide that he deserves to die![]()
It wasn't long ago i heard Braben mention this as an upcoming feature in an interview. Stations etc. wouldn't be a problem as these would be contract killer missions outside the legal system. On the contrary, the legal system would help lower the risk of law abiding targets getting hunted as killing them would render the killer wanted and becoming a target themselves.
These kinds of missions are already in the game with NPC contractors and targets, there are missions for hunting both innocent targets and outlaws and killing innocents will make you a criminal while killing outlaws will reward you with additional bounties.
I can't see any problems with this system.
However I would still like to set a bounty on who ever I want.
it should be a bounty that is only claimable by a real player and not be wiped through any kind of NPC interactivity
Problem with Frontier's proposed system is that it could be farmed.
Lets say I find myself with a substantial bounty on my head. I buy a sidewinder, get a buddy to shoot me down, collect the reward, then dump a portion of it as precious metals for me. Both me and my buddy have profited from my crime, while my victims who have contributed to the bounty have lost.

You have to pay off your bounty on death to the tune of 1.5X the amount thoThat is how they avoid the exploit and ofc it makes perfect sense just like how a criminal has to pay off their court costs and fines irl or go to jail. We don't have a jail function in Elite tho so you pay or lose everything.
Losing everything can still mean losing a lot less than the bounty figure, in some cases. If someone is explicitly trying to exploit the bounty feature, they will just accrue the biggest bounties possible, liquidate all assets, get killed, then reset the account and repeat.
