Setting off to the Pipe Nebula

Beginnings [Updated July 18th - the journey will continue soon.]
Today I will begin my journey to the Pipe Nebula, [Pipe Stem and Pipe Bowl]. I plan to document each system I visit along the way. I won't be on Elite every day and I currently don't have the most advanced scanner so I am sure there are certain system bodies that I will miss but I think I'll have fun and if any others out there also find it fun to read up on my journey then I'm glad to help. It's about an 800 Ly round trip from where I am currently positioned in the system of Mingpurine.

Main Objective
Reach the Pipe Nebula and return to the Mannovalo system unharmed to sell data.

Secondary Objectives
Document systems along the way (Complete with images), provide a route others can follow if they wish. Raise money for an ASP through exploring.

Vessel
Eagle - Equipped with Intermediate Discovery Scanner, Detailed Surface Scanner, 14 Ly capable Jump Drive, no shields and no weapons.
The reason for the Eagle rather than a Hauler: The view.
Since returning from my long time away from Frontier I have now changed to a Diamondback Scout. I am currently preparing it and aim to have an Advanced Discovery Scanner and a Jump Drive that should take me closer to 18 LY each jump.

Logging
Each day that I travel I will attempt to add images and thoughts to the main post here.

Roleplay
The Faithful Cult of Mannovalo have summoned the explorer and independent commander, Mikalus. After assassinating one of one of the cults more fanatical religious leaders he seeks redemption for the blood on his hands. While trading undercover in the system of Sugrivik the coded message reached him. It simply said "URGENT: Dark planetary alignment occurring, return immediately."

While used to such summons from The Alliance, this was a first from the Cult. He had a feeling that answering immediately might set a bad precedent, but he also knew the stars called to him. So answer he did. Now he finds himself sitting in the cockpit of his trusty Eagle, geared up for exploring, and ready to discover just what form of dark alignment the galaxy is throwing at them.

See you out there.

I am currently expanding on the roleplay side of this. I will provide an up to date link soon.

DAY 1

So, my journey began rather uneventfully. I headed out to:

System 1: Pegasi Sec KC-V D2-73 (Unfortunately forgot to log the light year distance, but I will go back and do this)

Pegasi Sec KC-V D2-73 System Data 2.jpg

All in all it was a pretty boring system, several planetoids but not alot to scream about.

Second jump was 7.69 Light years and took me here:

System 2: Pegasi Sec FH-L B8-6

Pegasi Sec FH-L b8-6 System Data 1.jpg

Again, nothing to shout about, although at least they weren't completely empty.

Third jump was 5.41 Light years and I arrived here:

System 3: Col 285 Sec YW-Q B19-7

Things were not looking up. The systems were getting worse. Still, I dutifully logged the information. I made a note to revisit this one because I have a feeling there may be more in it I just didn't find with my current set up.

Fourth jump was 7.35 Light years and I arrived here:

System 4: HIP 104075

HIP 104075 System Data A.jpg

It didn't look like much to begin with. At least the planet was metal rich.

HIP 104075 System Data 2 Planet 1.jpg

I also decided to fly out to the last belt and see if I could spot anything.

I did.

HIP 104075 System Data Planet 2 Metal Rich.jpg

I could scan that Giant from over 800 light seconds away. I went for a closer visit though to take these.

And that ended my first leg of the journey.

DAY 2
The next leg of my journey was just 3.00 LY took me first to:

System 5 HIP 103913 - this was actually an accidental jump.

HIP 103913 System Data.jpg

The system belongs to the Federation. Here are the details for the lone station found there.

HIP 103913 System Data Klimuk City.jpg

From here I jumped 7.75 LY to the system I initially meant to visit.

System 6 HIP103106

HIP 103106 System Data 2.jpg

There really wasn't much to see here, but I've marked it for a revisit when I will return with a better scanner.

Onwards! With a jump of 6.02 LY bringing me to:

System 7 COL 285 Sec AIP B20-0

COL 285 Sec AI-P b20-0 System Data.jpg

This one was pretty boring, at least it seems so with my current set up. The next jump was 12.33 LY and brought me to:

System 8 COL 285 Sec E0-N B21-3

I made my way out to the second sun in the system and found a few ice planet's there, but nothing of note. Still, for those who love data like I do. Here's your info :)

The next jump (I feel like I'm taking part in Quantum Leap) took me 6.93 LY to:

System 9 COL E0-N B21-2

The system data was pretty straight forward.
Col 285 Sec E0-N B21-2 System Data.jpgCol 285 Sec E0-N B21-2 System Data 2.jpgCol 285 Sec E0-N B21-2 System Data 4.jpg
And I did manage to take on decent picture.
Col 285 Sec E0-N B21-2 Planet 1.jpg

System 10 COL 285 SEC HH-B a43-1 was 11.35 LY away. [Please note you can not refuel here.]

The second sun yielded a large amount of ice planets with interesting orbits. They are also TINY.

I loved the data I discovered here although monetarily it's worthless!

System 11 was Deneb Okab and 13.7 LY away from the last system.

This one was pretty cool. Firstly, here are some pictures

Secondly some system data. I'll post more when I edit later.

Future Plans
Currently I am re adjusting to the game, expanding on the roleplay elements of this journey and preparing a Diamondback Scout to begin my journey anew. I have recorded each of my stops, there are more still to add to this post. Once I have added them I plan to continue my journey and provide you with the details.

If you have the money available I would recommend upgrading your eagle to a hauler for exploration, just ditch the cargo space, single laser and replace with your scanners etc. My Hauler has a jump range of 24ly (fairly decent FSD - B2 I think) so comes in very handy - the further out you go the greater the jump distances in some cases.

Edit: Oh, and good luck on your trip!

I have the money but I decided on the Eagle for one main reason: Picture taking. You just can't get the same view from a Hauler.

Personally I would say don't do a super long explore until you have the Adv. disc. scanner for 1.5m.

You can do it without, but you won't discover a fraction of the systems you pass through, and therefore wont make nearly as much cash.

If you are super keen, then try to stick to small stars / red dwarfs (I would say type's M, K or G), and also of low luminosity, which the the roman numeral after the type, stick to V VI or VII, they are dimmer.
Basically you will see life bearing planets much nearer these stars - probably within range of your scanner.

It's a good idea to look up this kind of stuff, it really helps since the galaxy is based on the real one.

I tend to agree with you. That's why I chose this nebula - it's not as far out as most and might not be as 'pretty' but I hope will still be fun, jumpable in my little Eagle and I won't miss a whole bunch of systems that I can't be bothered to go back to. Thanks for the tips on stars etc. as well.

You don't need a huge jump potential to get to the Pipe Nebula.

The way I see it there are two ways of exploring - jumping to your maximum to quickly cover the distance to the object, looking around, and then quickly jumping back. Or jumping more conservatively trying to trailblaze a route which could be used to push expansion that direction (you assume that the fully laden construction ships and arks will not have a huge jump potential). Speaking as someone who does the latter I would miss out on some gems of systems if I was a big jump pilot.

i recommend you to do some trading for advanced scanner. you will miss soo many objects with intermediate scanner and in the end make really little money.

You might be right - but this isn't all about money. I find exploring fun. I don't get to go on Elite Dangerous every day and money is a secondary objective! I just want to include others in the fun I'm having.

I think 14 LY as a max is fine for this particular trip. I like your style Andy! It's probably very possible to get to this particular Nebula on less than 10 LY a jump. We'll see.

Subbed. I'm in your boat, no point in exploring in a keyhole cockpit like the Hauler. Half of the fun is looking at the beauty or taking screenshots of nice scenes. I'm thinking of taking a "small" trip in my Cobra too. After some more rare trading and mini-exploring.

yeah, i understand it's not about money, but just because you find exploring fun, you should get ads, because the most interesting objects are usually more than 1000ls away from star ;)

Agreed: I'm not deliberately not buying one - due to limited play I can't afford one yet :) I will buy one the moment I can afford it!

Hi,
I've just come back to Founders World after an excursion of some 1700 ly (each way).
Just a few thoughts:
Buy the biggest fuel scoop you can. Consider using a large bay for it, if you can scoop lots of fuel, then you can stay out from the suns while scooping - ie less than 95% heat. That reduces the chances of an emergency stop & heat damage.
Don't assume that every star is scoopable - I ran into a "dry" region. In my Asp, I have a larger fuel tank than the Eagle.

IIRC, the bigger financial rewards come from 1000+ ly out...

Fly safe

Colin

You're going to love the Asp cockpit. You're basically sitting on a board suspended above space! :D

Edit: Also, good luck out there!

Thanks for the tips. I plan on going over 1000 LY out in each system, (Using my eyes to scan for moving stars etc. and orbits) but as you say, alot may be missed and require some returning.

Added in leg one of the journey:
Sectors included: Pegasi Sec KC-V D2-73, Pegasi Sec FH-L B8-6, Col 285 Sec YW-Q B19-7, HIP 104075
Pictures are also included.
