Settlement Massacre at a Military Base that was "Tipped Off" - wow.

Tried a couple of these today at threat 4 asking me to clear a settlement of 'criminals'. As soon as I took off from the station where I was given the mission I received a message saying the settlement had been tipped off and was expecting me. On arrival, I had nearly landed on the settlement's pad when suddenly turned hostile and began firing on me - I assume I was scanned by one of the several lawless System Authority ships flying around. These came in everything from Eagle to Anaconda varieties and ranged from Competent to Expert rating. My first attempt, I killed them all off plus some respawns, then while I was beginning my attack run on the settlement - which had a goliath and several anti-ship turrets firing at me - I had some weird issue when I was boosting over the settlement where my framerate plummeted and my ship appeared to teleport and collide with something, resulting in instant destruction.

Coming back with a similar mission, I wasn't even able to destroy all the waves of system authority ships as they just kept respawning. Eventually, after reinstancing a few times to see if the ship numbers were anomalous, and then 10 or 12 more kills in the final instance, I tried having my fighter pilot distract the next set of reinforcements while I conducted an attack run on the settlement - but the damage I was receiving from its defenses was too much for my Krait and I was forced to withdraw.

I wouldn't expect a raid on a military settlement to be easy, but this felt like a significant step up from anything else I've experienced. I loved the ship-to-ship combat mere kilometres from the ground but it really felt like it should've been advertised as a team mission - with a couple of ships running interference while a couple of team members landed on foot to attack the settlement's personnel. Or maybe I was supposed to land without getting scanned, or to land a few kilometres away and approach on foot, but that really didn't seem like a good idea with 5 or 6 potentially hostile ships circling above and "expecting me".

Anyone else had experience of these?

I've also had that experience several times, where coasting over a base caused massive fps drop (down to like 5-10) and collisions with invisible things. At one point, my ship actually got stuck high above the base and wouldn't roll pitch boost out or anything. It was just frozen in place as if the invisible things I was colliding with got stuck inside my ship.

Yep, you do not attack settlement with Anti AIR weapons and AIR support from AIR.
It's kinda obvious.

Well thanks for that contribution Captain Helpful. It also had anti-personnel turrets, so obviously I shouldn't have attacked it on foot. And it also had goliaths, so obviously I shouldn't have attacked in an SRV. Plus it had a half dozen system authority ships patrolling aggressively in a wide radius so obviously I shouldn't have landed my ship at all, because that would just turn it into a sitting target. And they'd been warned of my arrival so obviously taking a taxi would've been suicide. (Plus I couldn't actually see any of the defences until I got close enough to be attacked.)

But yeah, obviously. :p

I just tried one of these and it went much the same. At first I tried it on foot, since I there were security ships circling and I thought maybe I was meant to do it that way. Well, no. The goliath and the rest of the skimmers all attacked me along with all the ground personnel, and when I wasn't engaging it directly, either the Goliath or the base anti-air cannons blew up my ship that I had parked nearby. That was pretty impressive. I managed to take out a few of them before they got me, but I don't know how I would have done it properly. I came back and used my dumbfire missile launchers to get some easy kills while being shot at, but then changed to a real combat ship to get it done. Actually, no, I still couldn't do it. The anti-air defenses took out my Challanger and I couldn't get close enough to the Goliath to do damage reliably. They were shooting seeking missiles nonstop too. My missiles seemed to explode after flying 2km, so I couldn't outrange them. And the weird thing, is that when I went back again to get the extra few kills I needed to finish the mission, the settlement was gone. The faction still existed in the list of factions, but they had no settlements anymore.

I don't think system authority ships attack players on foot (but they will attack SRVs, so be mindful of that), so try landing, getting out on foot, and dismissing your ship to safety while you fight the settlement. Try to grab a level 3 security clearance off someone there so you can shut off alarms, ground and ship turrets, and point defenses. You can usually find the turret controls in command center restricted rooms in bigger settlements, or in power or somewhere else in smaller ones, and alarms are usually in security restricted areas.
Most of all though, keep moving and don't stay in one place for too long lest you get surrounded. Make a mental note of where you see medpacks, energy cells, and ammo and circle around the settlement, kiting the enemies into a more manageable swarm using corridors with only an exit to outside and a connection to only one other room, so enemies coming in and chasing you would be coming all from one direction.

Cool!

Perhaps there is some kind of catch, tanking it seems not working. Skulking stealthily to base and disabling power? Also are you sure it is not a wing mission?

I agree man, its impossible to talk about any of this on the forums as these guys seem to want to accept a broken game---how is this intuitive or fun gameplay?

This mission type isn't broken though. I mean, if you want examples of broken missions I can give you plenty. But this isn't one of them. It warns you in the mission message. You can fly away (after missing that) and then return, land nearby and approach silently.

It's just a different mission type and I fail to see how different == broken. I completed one of these in alpha without any issue once I'd worked that very basic concept out (they know you're coming).

Yeah its single digit framerates over some settlements. The way FD pretends that its news to them is a joke and it turns out to be a joke on them if you look at the stock price tanking.

I got my first one of these today and loved it! Didn't expect to get shot at while trying to land... quickly boosted out of there. I went to SC and came back, landed 500m away from the settlement and ran in. I killed the skimmers first, then steathily took out some commandos wth the taser, turned off alarms, and pretty much stealth-killed almost everyone with the exception of a few people meeting a plasma blast to the face.

100% working well and not broken. It would have been cool to do a pass with some missiles, but i didn't have any equipped in my ship.
