Several pieces of technology the scientists in the Elite universe should be working on

FSD Anchors
These handy devices could be fitted to stations and planets and would emit a dense graviton field capable of pulling a ship out of FSD. Such installations would need to be calibrated so as not to interfere with short ranged jumps within system, but could easily set the station or planet as the default location for longer ranged intersystem FSD jumps.

Not only would this allow for better defence, as such fields could divert incoming hostile forces into preprepared combat zones, but would be an economic advantage for systems where valuable planets and resource fields existed in orbit of the smaller stars in a system.

'Watchdog' Limpets
For larger ships routine operations such as mining, salvage and recovery and search and rescue can be more hazardous than smaller more nimble craft due to the requirement of the commanders to concentrate on their tasks while at the same time watching their backs. For such an occasion the 'Watchdog' Limpet would prove invaluable.

Armed with one of a variety of light weapons, the Watchdog could be deployed by the mothership and would automatically engage any targets designated by their commander. While their short battery life, ammunition supply and weak defences would make these limpets of limited use in full-scale combat, they would be suitable to guard against sudden ambush or pirate attack while dealing with more important matters.

Scan Blockers
Sometimes privacy can be hard to come by, especially when pirates, rebels and other malcontents constantly scan your ship seeking high grade cargo to acquire. When your bays are loaded with treasures, what you really need is a device capable of intercepting incoming scanned pulses and returning false readings, allowing you to keep pirates none-the-wiser to the cargo you hold.

The military and law enforcement authorities would have access to high grade scanners capable of piercing these false signals, and to those agencies who don't any honest and law abiding commander would of course deactivate their blocker when authorised professionals requested them to do so.

Stabilised Beverage Holder
How many times have you tried to pull off a tight, zero-gee turn arounmd the event horizon of a black hole only to have your beverage of choice spill over the front of your flight suit? The expense of dry cleaning, along with the repairs to the ship you were flying at the time, often build up over time. What we really need fitted to our ships is a fully gyroscopically stabilised holder which can be used to hold a variety of drinks containers during perilous manuevers. I for one would gladly pay several thousand credits for such a dashboard accessory.

Wider Variety of Ground Vehicles
For many years now the lightweight, all terrain Scarab has been the mainstay of planetary exploration for many commanders. However, with the rising colonial effort, dangers from extreterrestrial sources and need to recover lost cargo in greater numbers the time has come to seek out new, more versatile options for ground transportation.

A hard wearing transporter, with increased cargo capacity and a cargo grappler turret, for instance. Or an armoured vehicle for defence purposes in more hostile systems. Even a sleek, sports skimmer for when commanders need to get somewhere in a hurry, oir just want to burn off some steam. Not only would these transport options aid in the growing galactic economy, but they would also make better use of the spacious vehicle hangers on larger vessels, which currently only make use of multiple instances of the stalwart Scarab.
