Shadow bug flicker - potential fix?

Strobing shadows is something I seem to see on my portable (flatscreen) but I rarely if ever see it in VR, and the VR machine has its settings on high/ultra. The two systems are completely different though so I don't really know what the culprit would be. Maybe it's shadow quality vs VRAM or something like that?

Interesting point.

Honestly, I don't use VR as much as I thought I would but when I am using VR I haven't noticed any flickering shadows whereas they're often present when using my monitor.
I really couldn't say if it's because they don't happen or it's just that I'm too busy looking at other stuff to notice them.

It's quite distracting when it's happening in a debris field, such as in hazard zones. All the rocks flickering at once in synchronicity. Hundreds if not thousands of them, as far as the eyes can see lol

Setting directional shadows to Low is a well known "solution" to the flickering shadows for over a year. Just google it and you'll see that's what everyone says to do.

It's ridiculous that FDev still hasn't solved the problem. I just put it in the same bucket as anti-aliasing at this point.

Ahh you're right! The discussion that lead me to my own research was this, which insinuated that the "old fix" was broken and the issue was now unrepairable. But yeah the entire game needs a facelift. I was certain Trail Blazers would bring one of those. I felt like Horizons looked better. Disabling Bloom in of itself is a massive improvement.

The ‘chaos mode’ strobing shadows are literally my worst enemy in game, it hurts the stunning vistas in almost all situations when the flickering occurs, and it seems entirely random.

o7, I strongly advise disabling in game music and putting on some 90’s DnB/Rave/Trance to enhance the strobing.

Setting directional shadow quality to Low may mitigate the flickering, but it does not quite solve the issue. You need to turn directional shadows off entirely if you want to get rid of the flickering.

There's a whole thread about the quality of shadows in general
(https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/shadow-quality.587551)
where the flickering shadows issue has been mentioned multiple times (the thread is mainly about custom ultra-high quality shadows, but there's a how-to-turn-off-directional-shadows kind of GraphicConfiguration.xml example on one of the last couple of pages).

BTW flickering shadows is an early-Odyssey bug fdev had already fixed once, but they managed to reintroduce it later in one of the subsequent updates, never to make any further attempt to fix it (which is honestly a quite typical fdev thing).
