Shadow flickering

It's really bad, to the extent that it's putting me off playing the game. Because it's everywhere. Asteroid rings. On stations. Inside stations (though not the docking bays). On planets. On FCs. On Colonisation ships. On Stronghold Carriers.

I'm looking around the forum and don't really see any (recent)* complaints about this. I'm starting to wonder if it's just me? Or have people normalised/gotten used to it already?

Running latest drivers, maxed out settings at 1440p SS @ 1.5.

Great. So they just keep sitting on it then. That's what I initially thought but then given how little it's being complained about here I started to doubt myself.

Edit - just clicked on the issue tracker link - raised literally one year ago. My word.

Everyone else please sign the tracker page.
With all due respect... the ticket was raised a year ago (!!!!!) and has 150+ confirmations already, and carries the Acknowledged status (whatever that means in FDev speak these days).

It also merely takes 5 minutes of spending time in game to notice this as it's so widespread.

Think it's safe to say that the ball is firmly in FDev's court at this point.

They keep sitting on the bad anti-aliasing too.
I managed to alleviate it by running the game at 1.5 supersampling at 1440p native resolution. Doesn't really help anyone that doesn't have the necessary beefy enough PC setup though. Agreed that aliasing in Elite is by far the worst of any game I know, though the shadows are impeding my enjoyment of the game even more.

I'm just glad I don't suffer from photosensitive seizures.

I actually was under the impression that it was way better in the past two days since the update. I didn’t have that much time to thoroughly investigate, but I didn’t notice it at all in the 2 or 3 hours I could play. May have been luck, but the flickering wasn’t exactly rare before.
I have Spot Shadows set to medium, though, so that might also make a difference.

I'm on maxed out shadow settings, I wonder if that's the problem. You'd think that higher settings are supposed to make the game prettier...

Edit - I did have this issue before though on my older PC where I couldn't run as high settings as now.

I thought so too yesterday, but I think I just got lucky - I'm seeing shadow issues everywhere again now.

The VR version of the same problem has been active since October ‘22 and still hasn’t been acknowledged by FDev 😅

The flickering that used to occur changed in around Sept last year - instead of flickering/strobing shadows, all shadows disappear completely at certain distances, and will then all reappear once you’ve crossed another threshold. It does it a few times on approach to a station, looks crap, and I wish it would get fixed.

I tried a few different locations now and you‘re right, it‘s not gone - but it‘s different (better?) now, for me at least. Still anecdotal, at best, but at stations the constantly disappearing/reappearing shadows seem to be fixed or at least improved. I also went to an asteroid ring, where this used to be a constant problem, but right now there isn‘t a bit of flickering at all.
On planetary surfaces however it is definitely still there and the edges of the shadows now again show this strobing effect we used to have before. 😕

Edit: Just checked my settings, I have directional shadows set to high, and spot shadows on medium. But that probably doesn’t make much of a difference regarding the issue.

:( am kinda glad I never delved into VR even though my hardware would finally handle it now.

I landed at the terminator on an atmo planet last night, and while the lighting could've been so very pretty, it was all ruined by a larger black square that moved with the camera.

Elsewhere, got the strobe light treatment (not constant, but close) at pretty much every location I visited.

But hey, at least the shadows on the landing pad have been addressed, and something something with the Asp Scout.

I had noticed the station entrances and interiors were much better regarding shadow and light flickering. Haven't explored much outside of station interiors and ship cockpits though, so i dont know how planetary landings on ground is looking. Approaching a carrier last night flickered real bad from a distance and then sorted itself out when i hit maybe 6k out.

The graphic engine is totally abandoned at the moment with no active development we can see at least. Since forever all fixes in patches are about specific assets getting lighting errors fixed, but nothing engine wise. Nothing about flickering shadows, AA issues, potential DLSS implementation, ambient lighting incorrectly being applied to planets and an number of issues that are completely abandoned. Unless there's a major update to the engine coming we are in maintenance mode regarding graphics.

Antislias can be resolved via Nvidia DLDSR if you have the right GPU.
In the in-game graphics options, disables upscaling, disables anti-aliasing.
Then, let DLDSR 2.25x (or 1.78x if you hit a performance issue) and downscale it back to your display resolution. Best anti-aliasing you can get. Works for other games as well, generally to make them look even better, or work around a restrictive list of available in-game resolution.

About the shadow flickering, you can edit the game graphics XML. I tried it recently and, although. Not perfect it's a great improvment.

Also they had already fixed it once a couple of updates ago, they just managed to resurrect the bug in a subsequent update.

I don't know what this means but I hate the antialising in this game. How do I do this in plain English? I have a 4070 super
