Shadowbanning: Forum Edition

We don't know why that guy got shadowbanned. If someone repeatedly breaks the rules and makes new accounts to get around bans, then shadowbanning is fair enough in my opinion. I'm not saying that's definitely what happened in this case, but we just don't know. The contents of that OP as reposted on reddit seem fine to me, but who knows what this guy's posting history was before that? The forums have been chock full of criticism lately, even more so than usual. Why silence some of it and tolerate the rest?

A non-gaming forum I used to post on a lot had what the site owner used to call 'submarine mode' which he used to use for bad trolls - it's basically the same thing. The person who it was applied to could see their own posts and threads without any problems at all but to every other user, either logged in or out, they were completely invisible. Obviously admins and mods could see their posts still, he said it used to be hilarious watching them posting increasingly more demented stuff to try to get a rise out of people and wondering why nobody was biting. :D

Indeed - it's one of the oldest moderation tricks in the book. And fair play if it is used for good and not evil.

Allow me to refresh your memory of rule #12

12) Do not contest/discuss a moderation action in public.

Moderator actions aren’t always correct; if you feel that a moderation action was performed against you incorrectly, please see the final post on how to appeal. Openly posting about a moderation action upon you or others on the forums will not be permitted.

We do not permit discussion of moderation actions in public.
Not because we are attempting to silence people or any other paranoid reason.
If you don't know the whole story, I would suggest not talking about it like you do.
