Astronomy / Space Sharpest ever view of the Andromeda Galaxy

Just think! It'll only get better each year until it will become part of our backyard... Or is it the other way around?

Saw that on APOD and immediately thought - Cool, can we get a picture like that of the Elite:Dangerous Milky Way, with my flightpath superimposed?

It's also on the NASA astronomy picture of the day: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

Have a look through the archives, there are some amazing pictures:

It's a fascinating time to be alive.

wow, the level of detail is amazing! That zoom tool is pretty cool.
Time to start saving up for 600 HD tv's. :p

1.5 billion pixels is impressive, especially when it's not even the whole galaxy!

A little while back I made a 587 million pixel image from ground based data. Zoomable here.

Came here to post this as an expansion to Elite. We have only 400 billion stars, and Andromeda apparently has a trillion - should last for even the more hardcore players :p

Which way should I look to see Andromeda in Elite sky?

Here's an example, although I think I have a foreground star. Down and to the right of it is the Triangulum Galaxy as well.
