SHEPARD Chronicles Episode 8: Goliath's Rest and Galactic Ceiling

Hi everyone,

After an almost 6-month hiatus from the SHEPARD Chronicles, I have finally released Episode 8! There were many reasons for this delay... In the interim I was planning the Norma Mission, and was waiting for the arrival of my newly aquired pop-filter, which has improved audio-quality. While there was a delay in the production of the videos, I am committed to releasing the final four episodes of the Chronicles over the next month.

In Episode 8, Cmdr Parabolus broadcasts from one of the highest locations of the galaxy, Goliath's Rest - over 2,850ly above the galactic plane. Parabolus discusses the aims and approach for the long awaited climb to the galactic ceiling during Leg-3, and includes a brief history of the galactic limits and its importance to human exploration of the Milky Way galaxy. This video also focuses on Parabolus' discovery of two record breaking supergiant stars, a B-class and O-class, which made headlines in the Sol Herald. Finally, this video also features the conclusion of Leg-3 of the SHEPARD Mission, and footage and photos from Taen's Folly, the sad destruction of Cmdr Taen at the top of the galaxy....

Btw, I am aware that the video says the record breaker is an A-class Supergiant, however the galmap clearly designates it as a B-class (this is a known bug). And for anyone interested, the music is Alien Isolation soundtrack.

Thanks! I really love the highest and lowest points of the galaxy. The view is unparalleled! And for some reason the tops and bottoms are almost exclusively unexplored. Which is surprising because many of the goodies are up or down (mostly giants WRs, and black holes)

I fully agree, that the core area is very-very underrated. I'm planning to spend a lot of time there once the Q1 update drops. :)

For some of us it is a matter of insufficient jump-range - believe it or not I have yet to purchace and outfit an exploraconda...

Great to have another installment of your videoseries :)

It doesn't even have to be "highest" or "lowest". Having reached 2500 Ly below galactic plane (so far from lowest) during my cruise to Colonia was enough to see beautiful things (like Magellanic Clouds with no disturbing stars, or - of course - very different view at the Galaxy) and do over 100 of jumps in a row to untouched systems. Back to 2000 Ly below plane and a real crowd of non-sequence stars, white dwarfs, black holes occurred. Sometimes I could see 40-50 such bodies around me at default galmap zoom. Great little trip, I fully recommend it to every Cmdr!

Nice video! Good use of the Alien: Isolation music. Both the height and depth records have moved on btw; both are now beyond 3350LY from the plane.

Yes the records have now changed (the events in this video were from February and March of last year). That being said, after SHEPARD I broke Allitnil's standing record below the plane with a system called Nadir:

This was later broken again... by of course Allitnl only a few weeks after.

That is a nice ELW! What is its height or depth? It looks like it might be higher or lower than the ELW I found adjacent to Nadir, which is at -3120ly... which afaik is still the record holder for highest or lowest ELW (and still holds record for most rare ELW according to Marx):

That ELW is at -2739, so I'll let you keep that one! Shortly after I found it, I got to this place...

Sadly no longer visitable except by means of a one-way trip, due to the nerfing of double neutron boosting in 2.4, as are many such systems right on the edge. As such I'd like to give a shameless plug for my idea that this be re-implemented by way of an FSD experimental effect with the new engineering updates:

If you'd like to see this mechanic back, please show your support!

Greetings Commander,
Any news about the double stack? Any chances for re-implementation? (experimental or not)

Yeh I remember following your record breaking system a while back! Nice job.

There hasn't been an official response, but then I don't think FDev have responded to any of the feedback yet (apart from the G1-G5 progression). If you like the idea please add a supporting post to the thread! :)

Will do.. suicidal travels are traumatic.. and I love my "Rocinante" :)

Goliath’s Rest = awesome [up][up]

Thanks Erimus! I doubt you are heading this way for DWE2, but could be a great Basecamp [wink][wink]

Sometimes my favorite thing is to go back to a place that means so much to me, which I have already been to....
