She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

Compared to the Krait Phantom, the Mandalay is kinda small.
As mentioned (and shown) here, the Mandalay's body is almost exactly the same size as the DBX. Only the wings make it require a medium-sized landing pad:

About body comparision to DBX:

I think this is a very useful comparison, especially when considered along with the top-down picture.

Point being, the Mandy's cockpit and main hull are a similar size to the DBX but it seems like the Mandy' has a larger belly.
Added to which, the hull of the DBX would need to accommodate all it's internal systems whereas the Mandy' has got wide, chunky, wing roots that could probably have a lot of stuff installed in them.

Basically, the Mandy' looks like it's got a big belly which could, plausibly, be an empty area suitable for all the internal modules.

I eventually settled for these 2 builds for my Mandalays. The exploration one is based on credits purchased Mandalay, the Multipurpose on the Stellar one

Exploration: 78ly jump range, rather solid shields (510MJ, with 4pips in sys this gets to 1200+), 16t of cargo, Xeno MLC (repair and research limpets), 2G srv
Bubble multipurpose: 49-53 ly jump range, 64t of cargo, 1150MJ shields, Operations MLC (hatch breaker, recon, collector limpets) - runs very nice, i did a 500k ls SCO trip and the heat never reached 60%

To my opinion those too far back to have any actual effect. In RL when boosted with those I believe Mandalay would nose-dip, which is probably kind of opposite to what we would like to achieve when boosting near surface.
It also simply makes no sense.
For a plane, sure. Those usually don't come with thrusters for all directions. If you want one to lift off vertically, yeah, rotating main thrusters makes sense. Se
Space ships like we have in Elite though?
We already have very powerful vertical thrusters that lift us off the ground from even high G worlds.
And they rotate only for landing and lift off, as if they'd help with that somehow.
Mandalay might look like a plane, but it isn't one.

Disclaimer:
I'm pedantic here. It's not like I hate the rotating thrusters thing. I would turn it off if I could, but it does look cool. 😀

Hi :)

I find it quite interesting that you can walk up the ramp, right up to the bulkhead door. Not that it actually means anything in particular, but still....

Jack :)

Imagine they had added a secret easter egg with the Ascendancy update (ie. the partners who got a preview didn't yet get it) where you could actually open the door and there was some space inside, and said nothing about it in the release notes. I wonder how long before people noticed it and made a big deal about it here.

What a missed opportunity.

The first thing I checked after buying Mandalay XD

Just popping-in again real quick to say: Despite my previous post in this thread a few pages back , last nite because of needing a MEDIUM size ship to grab missions for helping defend against Thargoid-attack-on-a-space-station ( so fun! ) without any large landing pads, i ended up converting my previously "radical" exploration/mining Mandalay ( since i dread going into weeks/months of exploring without a crewmate for "company" lol Anaconda it is then! ) into now being a super fast long-range Anti-Xeno strike fighter.

4x class-2 enhanced AX MCs , with 2x beam lasers on the class-1 hardpoints for heat management + emergency caustic burnoffs ( tbh i didn't really know what else to do with the class-1 hardpoints ) and then of course that great class-6 anti-corrosion cargo rack since don't need a shield anymore. Sure, my hull was falling sorta quickly vs. the Hydra or the Swarms, but omg such epic swooping SPEED & sounds of weaving & maneuvering thru space combat against those pesky "aliens" was well worth the trade-off. Plus i love not having to waste time & tritium moving my FC at all to get closer to Thargoid systems anymore now with 70Ly jumping at my disposal in Mandalay.

Of course, as only the "final" 8th Titan remains, this type of AX Mandalay outfitting could be short-lived... :(

I finally managed to get online after a life-enforced hiatus from the game. Deployed my fresh Mandalay Standard and took it for a spin in purely stock form. My goodness can this ship fly! I'm genuinely excited to do a proper build with this thing! It was slated to replace my Krait Phantom as a galaxy-class self sustained explorer, but I'm starting to feel it may be wasted on that, considering how comparatively little exploration I do compared to activities in the Bubble. Time to get my thinking hat on methinks... the posts here have definitely sparked the imagination.

I made an awesome 64T PP2 merit runner with one, even copes nicely with the bounty missions.
