Ship Builds & Load Outs Shield boosters

So which shield boosters should I be using?

I normally just use A rated and then mod them. But I normally mod for resist and the I've been thinking that the lower class might be better for resist mods to keep the regen nice and high etc?

Depends on your ship..
my 'vette has
3x hvyduty
2x resistance augmented
1x thermal resistant
All A class. All have +20% shield boost special bonus, took many rolls, maybe over a period of 3months or more.
Always tweaking ;)

combined with 7A prismatic Thermal resistance, that all gives me approx 4k shield with approx 50%-60% resistances across the board.
I am not currently ingame but I recall those values 'cos I re-engineered them last week :)
Good for PvE, not sure about PvP.

I'm thinking for smaller ships with 2-4 util slots mainly.

Wondering if the extra shield MJ is worth the slower regen and power needed for a resist shield setup.

Really is ship dependent for example on a ship with a decent base shield like the Vulture I use 1 thermal modded booster and 1 kinetic modded booster as they generally have lower power draw than resist aug types and on top of the lower power they also have a balanced resistance spread.

On a 2 slot ship I'd go for one resist aug booster on a 4 slot as above, for ships like the iCourier with great base shield I'd use 2 x D grade boosters to keep the mass down, on ships with average base shields like the FDS/FAS/FGS I currently run 1 x K, 1 x T and 2 x resist aug A0 boosters.

So would you use Thermal SB's for PVE then, even if you have the G5 Thermal Shield? I'm trying to figure out for my FDL which currently has 3 G5 Heavy and 3 G5 Resistance Augmented SB's if I should use one of my old G5 Thermal resistance SB's or not. I have a few of them that I have in storage, but wasn't sure if I should just re-roll them to Heavy Duty or Res Aug ones, or if the thermal SB's are useful still in PVE with the Thermal shields?

Which SB mods you use will depend on the shield mod (thermal vs reinforced), which will depend on personal preference, or math, whichever you favour.

I'm currently running 5x HD and 1x Resist with a thermal biweave on my Corvette, simply because I'd passively farmed up a tonne of mats, and was able to roll ~54% bonus, plus ~4% resistance on the first 4 HDs, so didn't need 2 resistance mods to get to the 50% mark.

As mentioned, for the smaller ships you may run into power issues using A Class SBs, but an overcharge PP may solve that, depending on how much heat you can get away with.

Personally, I say do the math. Mock up your ship in Shipyard/Coriolis with thermal vs reinforced shields, then add some HDs vs Resist SBs and see which is stronger/your preference.

I've been out exploring for some time now so I don't have access to my fleet, but as I recall I went to D boosters on the smaller ships as it was the best (most efficient) gain to weight ratio and you could use Res Augmented to boost resistances as effectively as an A booster without the mass penalty. On small ships the penalty to Jump range and speed seemed to make D boosters the best option on the smaller stuff. The worst choice seems to be an 2 E boosters as one D will give the same shield boost at the same mass but only use one util mount.

Generally I tended toward Thermal Bi-weaves or A rated Thermal for the base shield and D Resist augmented boosters for the small ships.

I'm just trying to highlight the advantages of considering D rated boosters on smaller ships so that you don't add to much mass and take too big a hit on speed and maneuverability typical of what happens when adding A's and then modding them to HD.

Of course, each build is different. My rule of thumb is usually to aim for a strong enough shield paired to a fast enough ship so that it will outrun and survive when it's time to bail out.

Not a strategy for the hard core - to the death PvP build.

I'm a little torn between fast-regen shields, and massive HP shields. Max resists both ways, really.

I guess if you can get loose and run, HP pool wins. For smaller engagements and lulls, though, regen might win out. Depends on combat style a lot, though.

My choice on prismatics is easy enough, though: I haven't pledged ANY faction for PP yet, so it's not an issue. :p
