Shield Health Question

I have a 5A shield that I engineered to a Reinforced L3. To install a GFSD booster I changed the shield generator to a 3A that I then engineered to a L5 Reinforced.

In the right UI under "Ship Statistics" shield health for the 3A L5 Reinforced is at 282 and the 5A L3 Reinforced was at 449. Exactly what is shield health. Which of these two numbers are better and why?

This is the 3A L5 Reinforced.

That is exactly what it appears to be 'shield strength' - the amount of damage it can take before collapsing.

another factor to consider along with shield strength (health) is resistance to the weapon being used against you. On picture 2 shield thermal resistance is -9.7%, so if you are being shot at with a beam, pulse etc laser that will reduce the shield heath. (armour is the same) So you can mod the resistance with engineers to be better. You can use this site https://coriolis.io/ to play around to see the best mix of strength and resistance.

Engineering has quite a large effect on equipment. Looks like your g5 reinforced 3a shields are stronger than your 5as. Iirc they’ll take longer to charge though.

Other way round i think.

The 3A shield has better resistances while the 5A shield has higher strength. That's because the 5A shield is bigger and the 3A shield has a better modification.

Which shield would drop faster? You'll have to ask someone who knows more about that stuff than me. I'd guess the bigger shield is still stronger even with less engineering. It also depends on the attack type.

Sure but the thread's about MJ. Either way the 5A will certainly be stronger against anything.

I'm fairly sure that 449 - 9.7% is still higher than 282 - 0.2%, the kinetics and explosive resistance difference isn't even worth discussing.

It depends. Remember you have absolute damage that ignores resistances and that you have shield resistances that multiply shield strength when that type of damage is applied.

Which will make no difference in this case. The 5A will always be stronger.
