Shield Strength

Hi all

I am quite new to Elite so Im sorry if I drop in the wrong forum thread.

Down to my question: I recently got a Clipper after a pretty average Career (I guess): Sidewinder (Bounty Hunting) -> Viper (More Bounty Hunting) -> Vulture (same, but with a lot more fun :) ) -> Mission Grinding -> Clipper (Trading)

Now during trading I ran into a NPC pirate Viper (Master) and thought "have at thee creep".
Long story short after a few passes my shields were gone and I turned tail.

Now I started tinkering with my loadout and did some experimenting and during that I I ran into a question that I was never aware before: WHAT IS MY SHIPS CURRENT SHIELD VALUE???

I mean, I can tune around and see weight and power usage. But the most important value is nowhere shown???? Thats like buying a car and nobody can tell you how many horsepowers it has....

So if I use a 7C shield or a 3A and Boosters how much is the difference for example?

Would be nice if someone could help?

(Right now I sit in the Vulture again doing bounty hunting. Cause the Clipper looses shields if a mouse farts nearby. I dont wanna run into a PVP Pirate with a full load of ... unpaid workers aboard and a ship that can barely hold its ground against a Viper)

At the moment the game only shows the shield value only when you are in a different ship and look at your parked ship. I guess they are going to add all these statistics to the outfitting screen eventually. You can also use sites like ED Shipyard to experiment and plan a loadout, the numbers there are fairly accurate.

P.S.: The clipper has relatively weak shields for its size.

Keep practising, the Clipper is not a ship for begginers. That said, if a simple NPC Viper gives you problems in a Clipper, it may be a clear symptom of... let's say... 'inexperience' at a ship's helm.
.
Also, beware of SODS, (Shield Over-Dependence Syndrom) that afflicts many space pilots, specially those who piloted Vultures for prolonged periods of time. They tend to develop inferiority complex, agoraphobia, anxiety, and severe vulnerability feelings, the moment they are not protected by an strong shield field. The harmonics from particularly strong shields attune to their brain waves, causing severe addiction and dependence, like a drug. They also begin to consume larger and larger doses of SCBs...

Hey thanks for the links, guys! That is actually really helpful for designing loadouts :)

Guess I just have to get accustomed to the fact that bigger ship doesnt neccessarily mean better shields.

But why is this info not shown in game? A Bug? Oversight? Or design decision?

I guess what they are trying to say learn to pilot your ship more effectivley,The best way to keep your shield up is to not get it hit,now against such a small fast target this not easy

Hehe, well I only had 3A shields in the Clipper and according to the Ship designers linked above that is only about 1/4 shield strength of my vultures.

But you are correct I am not at all accustomed to the Clipper and obviously spoiled by the Vulture.

And I refuse to believe I was beaten by a NPC Viper. It was more a tactical retreat due to surprise of the new vessel's unique traits. :)

Hmmm...smug mode

Its kinda sad when a larger ship has less shield strength than a smaller vessel

it's only like that, only if you put a small shield on a large ship... OP wrote he put a class 3 shield on his clipper, biggest size clipper can hold is a class 7 shield - and this will have more than three times the power of a class 3 shield. for only ten times the price!

hi cmdrs

schi.jpg

all stats without boosters and some new ships missing
shield boosters
E0 + 4%
D0 +8%
C0 +12%
B0 +16%
A0 +20%

means 5 x A0 = shield strenght x 2

He didn't say he put a Class 3 shield on his Clipper.

Each ship has a base shield modifier which affects your shield strength. For this reason for example a Class 6A shield on a Python gives about 33% more protection than a class 7A shield on a Clipper, and about 50% more protection that a Clipper with the same shield.

The Clipper's main attribute is running away, which because of it's shields, it needs. You could try to combat in a way which uses it's speed to your advantage, or do what I did and got rid of the Clipper quickly.
