CQC Shields made of butter, what am i missing?

So, I've been playing EDA for about 2 months now and have leveled up to 45. I mostly fly the Imperial fighter. Its been a really fun game. However i've noticed that many times my shields seem to be butter. It seems i have to hammer away on the same ships for what seems like minutes? Several times i've been taken out in the beginning of the game, by a gentle sweep of other players lasers. What am i doing wrong? i usually have 4 pips on system now whenever possible, but it only seems to make me marginally more resistant. Also, why are there no stats on the different shield generators? (or more accurately, why are they all identical!) Are single-cycle shields actually any better than hyper charge ones? whats with the inconsistent statement of "weaker against thermic attacks"? it appears for the single-cycle shields on the Imperial fighter and not the Eagle. All the laser and plasma weapons are stated as 'thermic', so would they be worse? (most players aren't using projectiles) Any insight would be appreciated.

Shields capacity is the same. it depends on optimal range of your lasers/guns. When you're shooting from 800 meters and more ( i guess) your laser will doing lower damage. Single cycle shields has more shield capacity, but they're weak against every thermic attacks. ( it means every lasers, beams etc...) Plasma repeater is thermic too. Therefore it seems that your shields are sometime more resistant and sometime not.. It depends if player has weapon damage power up active or not and how far is from you...

@ Jade Relic - One of the nice things about re-spawning in CQC/Arena is that it doesn't cost a credit unlike the main game and you can rapidly try different load out combos per craft.

@ AlikCZ - Congrats on 20k kills [up], and I thought I had done well with 1200.

Unfortunately it's less helpful because there's no clean way to evaluate the impact of various slight tweaks. Actual stats would be very appreciated, either provided by the devs or simply collected by players (very difficult to arrange without private matches where everyone involved can settle down and do CQC Science).

Yes, I see, I don't have actual numbers, and in several matches I was lagging behind everyone. In general, though, I have observed that gun systems do the most damage up close, say, 300 meters or less, laser systems do fine at less than 600, and heat beams seem the most effective at less than 800. Fixed systems are noticeably more powerful than gimbaled. Sometimes I would mix a gimbaled laser and fixed heat beam to help with aim and damage. You see I play on a tiny laptop with mouse and keyboard and its a bit of a chore for target acquisition, the gimbaled weapons help out, especially against pesky imperial fighters.
For shields I seem to recall anything that says weaker vs thermal as being undesirable vs multiple beam using opponents. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I haven't played in CQC/Arena in over a week, I have been busy in the main game. Good luck have fun

You got to level 45? Nice! Did you know that damage is range dependent? At under 500m all shields are made of butter. At over 1km all shields take ~0 damage. Between 500-1000m you do reduced damage. Maybe this is what you're noticing?
