Shields - one ring to start them all?

seeing as we can now upgrade our shields it would be nice to have a visible representation of how well protected you are with various configurations, my suggestion is simply this: the basic starter shield shows as one ring around your ship, the next one up shows two and so on all the way up to the highest grade generator that has five.

if this makes the graphic a little too big then instead of a blue ring every other upgrade could be shown in red, like they are when you take some damage. this would indicate that although improved, your new generator doesn't quite have the power to fully charge the next ring.

i feel this will be especially important now we can own more than one ship as it gives a visual indicator of how tough your shields are, so that when swapping between vessels you can tell at a glance how far you can afford to push it in combat and you wont have to make a note of each ships shields to be aware how good they are.

so, if you love a ship you wouldn't just put one ring on it, you would put three to five rings on it ;)

thoughts/suggestions?

It makes the graph less informative for low-end shields, how am i to gauge how drained my shields are by a single ring? Even with it fading in and out wouldnt be as informative.

I don't mind the consistency of UI throughout shields, however i would greatly welcome an addition of simple number format like 230/1200 (shields are at around 20% here). In fact i want more stats to be shown in general, i want exact values on everything. I want to know my shield recharge rate, shield recharge delay, how much power it drains and how my power distribution into systems effects it down to a DECIMAL POINT.

with a low power shield generator having just one ring would be plenty information, it would still have 3 possible states: full charge (blue) damaged (red) depleted (no rings).

seeing as the starter shields are like wrapping your ship in tissue paper anyway i think it would fit right in.
