shimmering around text

Hello

My DK2 arrived yesterday and I have to say its a very immersive experience with ED, I had to resort back to Extended Desktop Mode due to the flickering in Direct Mode.

I noticed that when in game the HUD text and menu text is very jaggered, not sure how to describe it! Does anyone have an optimal guide for the visual settings to use for ED? My RIG is the following:

4770K @ 4.7ghz
16GB RAM
2x GTX780

i'm keen to get the best visuals, but wasn't sure if a setting is causing a shimmering effect on text.

EDIT: The best way to describe the text in the menu and the in game HUD is that it has red pixels around it when you look close, which make it look as if it sparkles which really distorts the letters.. it's as if the text is corrupting.

Hi Milamber,

Can I double check that in game your resolution is 1980x1080 and a refresh rate of 75Hz?

I think the FAQ needs some info like game resolution and how to set refresh rates.

I've found the best experience has been with Direct mode, in fcat I have a hard time getting anything to work with Extended mode but that may be because teh Rift is effectivly my third monitor.

Since my monitor doesnt support 1980x1080 I think that may explain my less than stellar experince. I'm about to use CRU to push my resolution higher and I'll report back on how it looks.

Sounds good Gomisan, I will try to disable the GUI effect that Wolfox mentioned since the game is unplayable at the moment since I can't read the text! I think we need a template with the right settings perhaps?

Tricky one as so many things could cause that :(

Wolfox's idea is a good one.

Also worth checking the Oculus quality slider is fully to the right.

The text in my main menu is also quite jaggered (as defaults to the left ). However my HUD text is pretty good.

You may already be doing this, but I always lean back as far as possible in the cockpit and press F12. It moves you closer and makes the text easier to read ;) Good luck.

Did you disable GUI effects in the Graphic Control Panel?

I tried this and the problem still exists :(

Thanks for the tips Mark D, unfortunately its still not possible to play, all options are set to max as well.

The best way to get text to a readable state is to use DSR if your video card is capable. The downside is that, at least when using 4x the resolution, is that the framerate drops significantly. I had to change it back to 1920x1080. I might try some other resolutions if I have the chance to do so tomorrow.

Ah yes good idea!

I have played many games at 4k resolution without problem, but not ED so i will see how it fares - hopefully my video cards are able to give me the FPS. I'm running 2x GTX780's. Could it ruin my RIFT?

Can you post a image taking a photo from the lenses without taking them off, like below?

Have you made sure you're in-game IPD measurement is the same as the Rift measures one? It worked wonders for my blurry text issue.

Ahh no i havent! How do i do that for in game measurement?

EDIT:

Is this the way you guys do it?

I noticed a drop in the visual quality of ED after the last patch, particularly the readability of text; it turns out the patch reset your in-game IPD to 0.000000. To fix this you have to manually edit your elite settings with the correct value.
