Ship and Pilot ID

I have noticed whilst watching the Alpha videos that all ships are now displaying pilot names, whereas in the early releases against AI it just showed ship names .

I was wondering what the grand plan is with regards to what you see when encountering another vessel, whether human or npc.

What I was hoping for is that all ships would appear to you as unmarked, you would need to do a scan similar to a plate check that the police would do to your car in real life, this would then reveal the pilot name, ship name, bounties etc.

Is something like this already planned?

I also wondered what relevance ship names will have in the game, for instance, when taking a mission or reading the news about happenings in a particular region, will it refer to actual ships as well as pilots?.

It would be great for actual ships to gain some notoriety as well as individual pilots.

It gets more interesting when you think that if a ship gains notoriety (good , or bad) this would increase or decrease the importance of that ship.

Ie - Selling a very well know pirate vessel that has appeared in the news countless times and has been used to murder and is wanted by the law could fetch a huge price if sold to the right person, or a huge bounty if take out by the right person.

>or - reading in the news that a renowned anti-pirate vessel is working in a certain region clearing it of pirates - could deter people and help make a route safer , or attract glory hunters!

<always do a history check when purchasing a second hand ship, you don't want your local station open firing without warning>.

Well kickstarter backers have the option of starting in a stolen cobra mkIII
(Whatever that means, could just mean you start with a bounty)

So that could be something else to be wary of when buying second hand (if we can buy second hand)

But yeah, I like the idea of ships having reputations and histories as well as pilots.

You've probably seen this but if you haven't

The sensors thread in the DDF may also be relevent.

Have similar hopes and aspirations, what is proposed looks very good.

ah yes thanks, this definitely helps answer the second part.

From the DDF

As long as the ship is not destroyed, a named ship earns a bonus to a commander’s reputation over time

This additional bonus is applied to the commander’s reputation values globally whilst he/she is piloting the ship

Both positive and negative reputations are affected (i.e. the bonus exaggerates the reputation of the commander)

News feed bulletins will reference named ships with high bonuses to reputation, highlighting accomplishments achieved by them - very nice, hope it applies to good and bad reps

There is no player driven second-hand ship trading planned for initial release

Second hand ships are created by the game and come with randomly generated names that the player can either keep or pay the fee to change as above

New ships come with no such name preregistered

Second hand ships have no bonus applied - Would be nice to be able to purchase cheap second hand ships from less reputable dealers that have a bounty attached (you don't know how much until you buy it though!)

In the current alpha, ships are initially identified as their type only (no name).

Only when you bring them into the front 45 degree arc of your scanner do they become identified (takes a few seconds). Once identified, a check of the computer allows you to determine shields/hull strength and the bounty if one exists.

To determine cargo, you must purchase a cargo scanner, approach the target to within 2000m I think and scan for about 10 secs. There's also a kill warrant scanner which works similar to the cargo scanner....

So the name retrieval is auto but only if you target the craft and bring it into you scanner arc. Other steps are manual.

ok thanks, I wonder if that will stay the same , or we will need to scan to see anything at all, ship names obv aren't in yet anyway.

TBH I think its good as it is. Adding an extra button press to get basic information seems unnecessary to me. Simply maneuvering your ship to get the target in front of you for scanning is enough, although they may offer devices which widen the field or provide 360 degree target scanning. In the normal scheme of things if you're an "innocent" trader, you're probably not going to scan everything on your scanner.

The cargo and warrant scanners are a bit more tricky to use because you have to get close and track for a while, but both of these devices are used prior to combat so if you're sneaking around looking for targets the device limitations mean you've got to at least get close to do it.

Greetings,

Slightly off-topic.

I do hope in time the market it opened up to be player driven - would add a nice level of immersion imo.
