Is the hull plating supposed to affect how quickly sub-systems take damage? From my limited experience it doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference.
I can totally see the point of putting upgraded hull plating on something like a Viper. But I'm having trouble understanding the point of putting better hull plating on large ships with low maneuverability (like a type 9 or anaconda), and maybe even on ships like the python. It increases ship weight, and drastically increases insurance costs. But any halfway intelligent player will target your subsystems for a quick kill, versus mindlessly chewing through hull plating (and/or just hit those systems on accident anyway). And NPCs are trvial to beat (or run away from) no matter how poorly equipped your ship is.
Am I missing something here?
