Newcomer / Intro Ship capture

Is it possible to capture and claim ownership of a ship in ED? Asking because I see it is possible to target subsystems (although I have not done so yet) and was wondering is this an alternative to destroying them in preparation for capturing?

Targeting subsystems is just a refinement of combat. We can't disable, board and capture yet, but at a later time this might be possible. Disabling instead of total destruction would be a really good addition to the game - at the moment there is no alternative.

As Quickr said, it is not possible to capture a ship. Shooting at subsystems helps you to disable a ship or destroy it faster, not reaching hull integrity to 0 %. If you shoot at power plant or FSD, ship will explode when this subsystems get to 0% altough its hull integrity was at 10-40-50%. You can have multiple ships only if you buy them, no capturing them, no selling them at star port.

You are welcome Ruger. Small add-on. Gimballed weapons are mostly used for destroying subsystems since they offer much better targeting (but weaker damage). I was playing in Conflict zone and I concluded that mostly big ships should be destroyed by targeting subs (like Anaconda, Python, Imperial clipper, ...maybe ASP or MK III). Small ships (viper, sidey, eagle) get blown fast so their subsystems go down in the same time as hull so I don't try to kill their sub. It's just MO.

Some find it easier to deal with anacondas by targeting drives first, then going for the power when it is disabled.

I used to target FSD based on the idea that it would lessen the probability if the target making an escape, but I don't think that ever worked.

Of course if you are pirating, it is useful to target cargo hatch. If you go at it slowly cargo will leak out.

I don't know if anyone found it useful to target weapons systems except on capital ships.
