Ship costs feel like a thing to be feared.....

So I'm still kind of new to ED so my knowledge of outfitting costs is sorely lacking at best. I'm currently in what i believe to be a fairly well equipped eagle. I'm now looking into buying a new ship. As a almost strictly combat pilot I'm looking at the cobra mk III but all the talk of price to outfit is making me fearful of even considering buying unless i'm a billionaire. This fear stems from the obvious cost of the ship and the high prices of outfitting and even from ammunition prices since my missions don't seem to pay what feels like enough to be incentive to upgrade. I really like my eagle but it just doesn't make the grade for combat anymore and the missions I am offered tend to make it feel like a grind. This isn't so much a complaint as it is a need for some advice so please by all means make your suggestions for me and any new players. I'd like some insight into the overhead of upgrading my ship to higher tier vessels as well as outfitting costs. Thanks in advance to all with input on this matter.

You'll get better rewards as you rank up your Combat Rank, you shouldn't worry that much about the money It only seems like a fortune because you're jsut starting.

Like LameoveR said, go for the Viper, its a pretty sick ship and the next after the Eagle if you are using it mainly for combat.

I went Eagle->Viper->Vulture, they're relatively cheap ships that you can maintain doing only combat missions/stuff.

You have the very capable Viper, and the new Diamondback Scout as options in between the Eagle and the Cobra. The Cobra is a very very desirable ship, but it is really considered an all-purpose ship.

You will gain credits with increasing efficiency as you improve your current ship, and as you learn more of the ins-and-outs of the game. The best advice I can give you is to not rush into larger ships. You may have better luck in a well fit out Eagle than a stock Viper. And please, be sure you have the insurance credits to cover what you are flying.

I've managed to save up enough to buy an Anaconda, it took four months of pretty religious grinding. It's a fortune :p

Well life is much easier nowadays with all the boosted rewards, you don't even need to grind anymore. :)

I can do between 2 and 4m/h in a HiRES if I get a good spawn. The A7 Powerplant for my Python is $50million. It's still a grind.

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70M,,2-3w3c5U3w2M5U22,

This will help a lot working out what you can and can't afford. Remember to ensure you have at least 2X insurance and cash for cargo etc

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=155377 may help getting a discount. The current best place is Li Yong-Rui controlled systems such as Lembava if you can manage the trip there you can take 15% off the ship cost that Edshipyard shows.

This is super helpfull so thank you very much. Checked out a very heavily kitted Viper and it came to about 5 mill! I am currently sitting at 800k that is a long long way off lol we'll see what happens so keep that info coming commanders i greatly appreciate it.

Only if you make it a grind, just play the game and credits will come. What do you want? 10m/h? Its not that bad....

I think you may be doing it wrong. I keep swapping between professions and so far have only grinded once during the Arissa community goals a while back. Did about 90mil in Bounty vouchers in a week (so much caffeine!) for over 75mil community goal bonuses, sadly I missed out on the crazy 20+mil payout on the "Preparing for the president" CG a while back.
Otherwise i've mixed up exploration, mining, trading and combat and kept the game alive. By tomorrow night I should have 15/20 ships, 14 of which will be fully upgraded. I do want 3 Anacondas eventually though (Trade/Exploration/Combat) so I actually have 8 ships left to buy/outfit to have everything :D

I have yet to get involved in any community goals things as i have no clue about those systems in game and i'm super apprehensive about anything involving other players as i have yet to try any open play. Still kind of wrapping my head around this whole thing but from what you say i may be exactly doing it wrong. That or i just haven't the kind of time to put into this. Must look further into powerplay and community goals...

It'd be nice if it didn't take the length of an entire other game to procure enough credits to buy a single module :p

I've done a bit of everything since I bought the game 12months ago. At this point I need to take a break because the content is getting VERY repetitive. The trade routes available to a jump optimised T-9 are mind numbing and will still take me 8hrs of nothing but meta-trading to earn enough to buy that module. That's provided the trade routes available will pay well enough.

The RES's are better than they were, but even that is getting tiresome now.

I love my cobra, I brought one straight from Sidewinder, when I have 450k in the bank. Which to be honest, was not the best move. The Viper should be first for combat. It is half the cost of the cobra, and about the same to upgrade. I have a insurance re-buy of 200kCr, for my Cobra now and I am about half way to the fully 'pimped' Cobra. Spent 4mil so far and if I had spent that on my Viper, it would be as good as it can be. So I would say, Viper 1st. RESs and CZs are easy credits and don't be afraid to boost out and get repaired, it is cheaper than the ship and the bounty losses. Ammo, many ideas on the subject. Chaff, yes, the rest, I use beams, love them, but you have to take care with that trigger finger.

As the the credit fears? Well in many ways, that is the game. Keeping control of the bank account and not letting greed make you poor, is what it is all about and fuel of course. If I can't re-buy my ship 5 times, I fly a cheaper ship and build the credits up with that.

Edshipyard is good, but not always correct. It says sidewinder is 12k for a start, but it is good for looking at builds.

Well for the future this is the thread you need: :)

First post gets updated often but isn't perfect. Basically wait until one pops up that looks like something you want to do (trading etc). Go to the system thats in the message and sign up on the bulletin board.
This adds it to your missions, if you do what the CG says and hand any vouchers etc in at that station you will get progress.
Your reward is based on contribution compared to other CMDR's (top 5%, top 15% etc) but the lower rewards will be good either way. Theres one at Lembava at the moment where a single exploration scan sold to that station will net you 175,000Cr bonus.

Rewards increase as the progress of the goal overall increases. The tiers bar on the right of the mission window shows how close to completion it is. The CG's end when that bar is filled or the timer runs out. At the moment they can be done in Open, Solo or Group with no penalty to any of them.

Some prefer this:

but whatever floats your boat. :)

May I suggest that it's less intimidating than you might imagine; I started a couple of months ago, and with semi-casual play I'm now bouncing around in a nice trade-equipped Anaconda hauling over 400T, wondering what to do next (there isn't anything to do next). Enjoy the early-mid game!

How on earth do you get enough credits for 15 fully specced ships?

I've been playing since gamma and only just got a Clipper?

But then again, I only play for a few hours a week.

Still,...... 15 fully specced ships is a hell of a lot of grinding!!!

Get the Viper it is a fun cheap ship and you can run if things are not going your way. Then get a vulture and will be king of killing npc.

Too much time to play... I think you've mistaken grinding for doing nothing else in my spare time (student :p) there was no real point I felt like I was playing for profit except that 1 week I mentioned. Also I feel I should mention you can get the cheapest 13 kitted ships with 310mil if you do it right. Add on a 15% discount if you buy in the right places and you're at 260mil which probably isn't far off where you are now. Credits really roll in once your at the Vulture stage.
As I say that one week where I did grind I made 160mil+ alone so its not too hard to imagine where the rest came from.
