Ship crew questions

I know Npc crews are coming. I have a question aimed more to the Devs. Can we have like normal conversations with the crew? Seeing that the we'll spend a lot of time with them in SC and whatnot it would be a waste if you couldn't talk to them about random topics.

Maybe they can be programmed to discuss Things happening in the system your end, Galnet, the market and stuff. Casual stuff like celebrity talk and things of that sort, Argue about certain choices you make in a battlefield earlier or a lost in profit it trading. Maybe have a rep system tied in with your crew in some way. We need things like this.

My question is if this is planned and how will any of this work?

I vote for crew members that pass the Turing test.

Joking aside, though: I'd imagine your hopes would be easier to accomplish if the conversation were text-based. But that seems like an ancient way to interact with NPCs. If they are going to try to implement voices for each crew member, I'd suspect they'll have to limit it to a few short statements or responses to orders.

This is tough one. Biggest issue is that there are our standards with voice acting and that takes a lot of work to be done.

Having a crew that act similar as crew in Mass Effect would doom me to play ED endlessly but those are wet dreams I suppose. I am afraid that there are only too options beneficial to the game:

1) Crew is done really good and we can have some conversation with them. There would be let's say a hefty sum of personalities and voices for our crew as we hire them and we can have limited topics to talk about.

2) If option 1 can't be done good then it is best to keep it empty or put basic robots as crew with extremely limited communication as they would focus only to do what they suppose to.

If I remember correctly, we were suppose to have a choice of a hired Npc crew or actual bots that focused on their task an nothing else. If that is the case then conversations should be an option with the Npcs on board you're ship. Maybe just to lead to missions or something if it has to be limited. Otherwise why bother with the Npc crews at all and just give us the bots.

I just have so many questions on this because that empty chair in the Cobra will bother me endlessly until we can hire a crew. But why hire an Npc if he/she's not going to talk to me?

I would definitely like to see certain crew members with variety Some might have story lines while others are just basic workers who would rather talk about sports and craft beer and take their pay check.

Maybe certain, rare, crew members would take you on a series of missions that might follow one of the fan fictions. Like picking up Elyssia and going through a modified version of the dark wheel.

Most might just have certain personality types. Such as, a particularly drunk crew member might be plied into working for less by keeping a ton of beer in the cargo rack.

Yes this is exactly what I would love to see. The crew is such an important part of any ship, hell in most cased the most important part of the ship. Nothing will kill an alive Galaxy faster if the crew of your ship is just a bunch of mindless drones with no souls. I'd love to bring on some escaped slave that will work for food then lead to me being shot at by his/her master. Or a gunner who won't shut up about the one lone Thargoid he killed 10 years before you hired him. Or a copilot of the Cobra that just wants to get away from her dad so she works for basically free and over time she tells you about the many boyfriends her dad chased away with a sidewinder.
