Ship damage models from inside cockpit.

I've just actually noticed after some rough encounter in the annie.

Parts of the nose of the ship have broken down, folded up and around and from the outside view it looks splendid. However when I'm inside the cockpit none of these appear? Clearly if I place the line of sight of the camera along the cockpit's view I notice my view being obstructed by the damage to a certain degree.
Would be nice to see that happening from the inside too! It would allow to assess the damage from inside, and to a definite degree add to the immersion!

Your thoughts? Is there a specific reason for it being absent?

The 3d model for the ship you see from inside the cockpit is not the same as the external view one. It's very obvious in the asp, where you can have a ton of weathering on your paintjob, but from inside the cockpit it looks freshly painted.

this. its common. basically a game asset is usually made up of different LOD (Level Of Detail) models because you dont want to be rendering unnecessary detail if yo can help it. So you will have an interior model which will have a very large amount of geometry commited to the interior of the ship but probably most of the exterior not even modelled (anything outside of the pilots view is not needed in this LOD). you will then have a series of external models that represent the ship at various distances. So when you can only see the ship as a tiny dot a long way off it will have hardly any detail and the LODs become more detailed as you get closer. Other uses for LODs can be simplified meshes the game uses for physics simulations or points in the model of interest such as axis around other parts rotate or hit points etc

I fully understand the concept, I'm just wondering why? Has it been attempted previously causing such big load that it would reason not to put it in?

I mean sure, FSX used a static overlay, but that was released in 2006. For all the blab I hear about immersion surely this would've been of some concern no? I don't think optimization should come at the cost of what I'd consider to be a feature? A fully modeled and rendered ship. Which apparently it only partially is?
Consider me petty, maybe, but detail does polish in my very honest opinion.
I find it a little odd.

well yes. You can't leave the cockpit and wander through the rest of the ship either. That alone means it is only a partially modelled abstraction of the full ship. We all want additional detail in some way it's just that to some of us this is more apparent in other ways. Personally the ship wont feel like a ship until we can walk around it. Even though it's amazing at the minute in VR it still sort of feels like an extension of your body rather than a vehicle at times.

There is a damage model for the Conda and is in game. I believe it is the only ship using one at the moment and has been in since the beginning.

Switch to external camera to see it properly.

He is aware of that. He is questioning the disparity between external and internal views of said damage. You should read the thread next time :p

I hear that! Man I can't wait for VR to be commercially available. That said, when I'm driving, the car does feel like an extension of my body.

Because a damage model has been out in a works for the Conda it makes sense that it can be seen from inside the cockpit. The other ships do not have one so from inside the cockpit no effort has been made to see damage to the paint.

I pretty sure one of the devs commented that they just haven't gotten around to doing it yet and that it was on there list of things to do.

/sigh. Try again.

@OP agreed it is odd. It would be nice to see the weapon impacts on the hull too (like Only only noticed last night that machine guns leave (temporary) bullet holes! It would be great to see my ship(s) being blown apart piece by piece.
