Ship damage while exploring

I'm 48kLy into my round trip to Sag A* and back (almost home). My FDL's hull is at 96%, lowest system is 92%, and I haven't used any consumables at all; still have all my heatsinks, SCBs, chaff, and cannon ammo.

Anyway, if I had been more careful, I probably could have made it there completely undamaged.

So does that mean shields will still run if the distributor is off? Never know when you might crash into a planetary ring and need to take evasive maneuvers ;)

Yes.

Turning off the distributor doesn't disable the capacitors, it just prevents you from changing pip settings.

Tested, confirmed. My shields go up fine when enabling them while distributor is offline and the capacitor recharges. That is actually also an important lesson for combat, if a little more power is needed :)

Only time you ever want to disable your distributor during combat is if you have a stealth ship that doesn't have a shield generator equipped.

My stealth ships typically run 1 SYS, 4 ENG, and 1 WEP. Need something in SYS to be able to use heatsinks, while the cannon I use don't need more than 1 pip in WEP, which leaves the bulk of ENG. However, even in this scenario, disabling the distributor is a trade off.

Like others, I leave it disabled when exploring to save power and heat. This was especially important in the FDL because it tends to run very warm when operating near full power, and I would not have been able to scoop nearly as well with all of my stuff enabled.
