Ship Decisions..?

Hi all,

So I've been doing rare good runs in the Type-6 for a while. I have gotten myself 11 million credits in cash, along with the Lakon Type-6 and also a Cobra MKIII, which is fairly well kitted out.

Anyway, given the fast approaching Wings update I wondered which ship I should really go for. The Type-7 or the ASP? I could take the ASP and keep my Type-6 for pure trading, allowing me some fun bounty-hunting with pals in a semi-decent ship. Or, I could go straight for the Type-7 in order to grind to the next ship.

I'm just concerned that if I don't make the jump to the Type-7 now, then it's just going to be much more difficult to progress my ship. Unless of course people think that I can make decent money fast by not trading...

Any thoughts and advice will be greatly received.

Cmdr Bwebzy.

Go for the Asp and dump the type 6

A decently kitted out Asp for dual purpose stuff can carry 4 multi-cannons, and various other upgrades, plus it can carry 80 tons of cargo about 160 odd Ly on one fuel tank

And you'll have the cobra left for doing small runs/going pew pew pew.

Plus a kitted out asp in a high intensity warzone is great for taking down pythons/anacondas when you've got some fighter cover.......

I was in the same position about a month ago. I now have a fully kitted A-class Cobra for pewpew, a D-class Asp (but A-FSD/FS) for exploring and a fully A-class T7 for trading.

Next ship I was going to swap the T7 for a trading Python or T9.

So to answer your question I'd go T6->T7 and then it's only a couple of dozen trade runs to the ASP.

My two pence worth is thus: The type 6 is more cost effective than the asp. The asp can look after itself better but you would have to dump cargo capacity and spend about 30 mil making it tough. You can easily afford to lose a type six and not have to weep too uncontrollably. Also wings will allow your fighter escort to make some creds for protecting you so everyone will be happy. The Asp really isn't that great unless you throw obscene cash at it. Go T7 then get a clipper or python or something. Viper is still the best butt kicker out there at the cheap end, I scalp cobras and asps all day in it. The Asp unsurprisingly is a tremendous explorer and I cant argue that there is little better (except maybe an expo fitted anni). I quite like my T7 (watch out for the heat and don't get one unless you have 25 mil as A distributor/ A FSD/ at least B Thrusters and at least B Power is a must. It isn't to bad at looking after itelf against small fry either, 4 hardpoints and a bit of ramming boost often offend.

I dumped the t6 for the Asp as soon as it was economically feasible. The drop from 104 to 96 cargo was a small price to pay for the increased role flexibility and survivability of the Asp.

So it's looking like a draw...

Thanks folks,

Hmm, I'm starting to think that I should take the T7, and then in reality it won't be too long before I can then afford the ASP too. Ideally I want to have a bounty hunting/combat ship (ASP) and then have a good hauler (T7). And the fastest way to achieve that would be to take the T7 first I guess.

Either way it's looking like I should try and get myself to 20 million cash before taking either then?

25 mil in total inc. cashing in your 6 and all modules probably another 10 for the asp ( you need the 6 slot shield as the 5 is poor for the size of vehicle A grade is 16 mil alone)

I guess what I am saying is that using the Asp as a trader with 96 tons and the class 5 shield does not make it a fighter, you'll look after yourself pretty well but don't think you can take on 190k assassination missions with that spec or its going to cost you dear.

This grind is grim. It's going to seriously devastate me when they bring out further intermediary ships that all my dawdling friends can take advantage of...

Don't underestimate the little ships... my viper is still the best fun I have in this game... I would love to see the looks on the enemies face when they realise the multi cannons firing at their shields which they perceive as no threat so come closer, come with a big brother called plasma accelerator..... I love it even more when someone flames me for cheating when they don't think all this gear will fit in a viper chassis and work.... (I may only jump 6 ly but I pack a punch on my hunting ground) You have to have some fun or where is the point of the grind...?

Yeah, a 96 cargo Asp is an armed trader. When I mentioned role flexibility I was thinking about how no credits are lost to refits. It's easy to shift from trading to exploration, for example.

That, and I feel much safer trading in an Asp with 6 guns and A5 shields compared with the T6. Plus I quickly got annoyed at the T6's tendency towards wanting to spontaneously combust.

I'm constantly switching my ships to do different things and my last was a Cobra I had for some rare-trading. A few days ago I thought I could go back to my beloved T6 for some bulk-trading to grind up for a T7..
Yesterday I reached my goal and got me a T7. Tbh, it's not as bad to fly as some people tell, but you notice it's way more sluggish than the T6 and has less range and that's the real problem. In the time I was able to do nearly two 2-way trips in my 100t T6 I was only able to do one 1-way trip in the 208t T7, both on an equal profit/t route, so a lot more profit in the T6. Ok, the way to the station was longer for the T7, but I tried to count that in and in the end the T6 was still ahead, simply due to better range and agility/speed.

The funny part of the story is that I'm now flying a mining-Asp which gives even less profit, but is very Zen (and can fight off the occassional pirate) :) Maybe I just need it a bit more chilled after all that trading lately.

TLDR;
If you just want to do profitable trading, stay with the T6 until Clipper or so. T6 is a fine ship..
If you want to feel like a space trucker in a really heavy cargo ship (for RP or whatever reason), go with the T7.

I've been known to do a little mining with an Asp. It is Zen. Equip a 7+ bin refinery and keep the trash. You have plenty of cargo that would otherwise take forever to fill. All those 2.5k cr/ton materials do add up. Just don't seek them out explicitly

I have an all A T7 and am making 2600 per ton on a 200t loadout (have an A5 shield) running a one jump run with stations under 150ls.. I am chalking up around 2.5 mil an hour doing this. That is not achievable in a type 6.

Screw it, ASP it is. I'll sell my Cobra and do some exploring for a bit. Like it was said, you need to have fun somewhere.

P.S. what music would you choose for the most Zen experience? I like the thought of killing people to classical...

Thanks again all, you've certainly helped.

Asp, then have fun earning the upgrades for it. Can't imagine selling my asp, it's my only ship now and it kit it up depending on what I'm doing. Currently exploring.

Coolio: Fantastic Voyage.

@SiriusSeven
I'm using 7 bins and 40t cargo-space. I don't know how long I was out this morning, but full 40t gave me roughly 260k cr. Sure, other things are more profitable, but not as relaxing. :) Also I'm not picky. It makes no sense just hunting the high value stuff. If there's 47% Indite in that 'roid, sure.. I'll take it and all it's rocky brothers too..

K, back to topic ;)

@bigmuthatrukka
Then you have really found a jackpot route for the T7. I had one like this for the T6, but the pad restrictions of the T7 don't make it easy to find one..

Good choice! I'm actually exploring out there in my fantastic Asp too. Awesome experience :)
And of course you can trade, fight and do what you want with an A kitted Asp.

I went from a Type-6 to an Asp. Not sure where the 96t cargo came from ? I easily got 120t in my Asp and still had a very capable ship.
It's also a mid-step to the Type-7 i have now. As the Asp carries more cargo than the Type-6 and has combat capability it seemed like a no-brainer to me. Also when you want to go up to the Type-7 selling the Asp gains you around 10 mil (depending on equipment).
Still not sure on my next step tho, cargo-space-wise, what's after a T-7 ?
