How about, if you're ship is destroyed, along with any wreckage that gets dropped, you also drop a black box that contains a backup of your exploration data? Some of the data will be corrupted - so it won't be a perfect copy - but this gives you the opportunity to return to your wreck and recover some of your data. Conversely, pirates might want to skulk around in deep space harvesting exploration data from unsuspecting explorers.
Also, I suggest that after a short amount of time - if nobody has found your black box (say you were outside the bubble and crashed on some remote hi-g planet) - that missions will then be created - pointing people to recover your black box - and to share the profit from the exploration data. To make things interesting, these missions could be given out to multiple people at once - so its a case of whoever gets there first.
This might also tie into odyssey somewhat - allowing people to scavenge wrecks for crashed ship's black box's in order to sell the data.
