General Ship Destruction and exploration data - a suggestion

How about, if you're ship is destroyed, along with any wreckage that gets dropped, you also drop a black box that contains a backup of your exploration data? Some of the data will be corrupted - so it won't be a perfect copy - but this gives you the opportunity to return to your wreck and recover some of your data. Conversely, pirates might want to skulk around in deep space harvesting exploration data from unsuspecting explorers.

Also, I suggest that after a short amount of time - if nobody has found your black box (say you were outside the bubble and crashed on some remote hi-g planet) - that missions will then be created - pointing people to recover your black box - and to share the profit from the exploration data. To make things interesting, these missions could be given out to multiple people at once - so its a case of whoever gets there first.

This might also tie into odyssey somewhat - allowing people to scavenge wrecks for crashed ship's black box's in order to sell the data.

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. Something similar already exists in the game environment, and spawns in signal sources once you get a certian distance outside the bubble.

I don’t believe it counts as any actual explo data, but it has some monetary value. Something about survey data, or something, so apparently that exists according to the game.

I feel like it would be a net gain for explorers, who sometimes land a little hard, or die in other hilarious ways. If you totally eat it on a 6g world, 3 months into a trip, you just gotta beeline back to your last location, then carry on.

I figure those who are gonna shoot at asp explorers are going to anyway, regardless of potential rewards.

edit: even if the item was only visible to the owner, it would still be a nice Quality of life feature

For an explorer, the only thing worse than getting ganked and losing months of data would be for said ganker to then turn in their exploration data.

I’d rather it be available for rebuy, like everything else of actual value is.
