I think if you log into the non horizons version of ED... you will load into your ship in orbit of planet. Never tried it but heard it works.
No, if your ship is destroyed it's desstroyed. You can stay in an SRV but ultimately you have to self destruct and rebuy your ship. If you load into non-Horizons you'll just be presented with a re-buy screen, right away.
The "load the non-Horizons version" trick is only useful if you are for example stuck somewhere in an SRV and can't get out, or after some rare bugs, like falling through the planet.

Thanks for the clear up. I wasnt sure... I had heard some people talking about it a while back.
drive around looking for mats for refuel and repairs until its possible to board and take over other ships... then all u need to do is find one of those landed NPC ships, and.... piece of cake

There are hangars on planetary bases. Have anyone tried entering there while a ship is dead?
That reminds me. I used to play Star Fleet Battles - a board game from the '70's. An optional rule allowed ships to have Legendary Offices. These had bonus capabilities - Legendary Engineers coaxed more power from the engines, Legendary Weapons Officers increased weapons damage, etc. Where I'm going with this is that Legendary Captains had many bonus capabilities, one of which was that if his ship was destroyed he could take over an enemy ship if he rolled 6 sixes. What options are there for a stranded CMDR when he/she is in an SRV and their mothership is destroyed?
Self Destruction seems the only viable option here however, would be cool to 'rescue' them.
Just a thought.
Happened to me. My stripped down Explorer was way too stripped down, so when I dismissed it the PP overloaded, the thrusters failed and it dropped head down on the ground. I tried the trick with lauching ED without horizons. I indeed spawned in my resurrected ship in Orbit, put the PP overloaded and I had no time to Switch off some modules before my ship blew. In the meantime I learned how to priorize modules
