Newcomer / Intro Ship died after upgrading weapons

So I earned around 50k and decided to buy some new weapons, a gimballed pulse laser and a gimballed multi-cannon. I also added a kill warrant scanner. I then went out and looked for something to test them on. I found a target, pressed the fire button to deploy hardpoints and everything stopped working. I was left stranded in my ship running out of oxygen unable to thrust or turn. The weapons still worked though. I've tried to fix it but I've been unsuccessful as I don't even understand the problem. I imagine it's something to do with power consumption. Can anyone help?

You have insufficient power to power your weapons and all the other ships system. A quick solution is go into the Modules tab in the Right console and set the Priority for the Frameshift drive and cargo hatch to 3. Only they will shut down when you activate your weapons. Long term solution is to upgrade your Power Plant.

Your power plant was unable to cope with the extra demand you put on it with the weapons and KWS, so it shut off your other systems to enable them to work.

You can change your priority settings in the modules menu on the right hand screen, you could set your weapons, thrusters and shields to priority 1, KWS, sensors and life support to priority 2, everything you don't need while fighting to priority 3, that way only the non essentials for combat will shut down, leaving you with engines, shield and weapons to fight. This is a short term solution, look at investing in a new power plant and power distributor.

Happy hunting :)

what Spanners and DMLeeroy said and in outfitting section on your right bottom info screen you can seen how much megawatts your power core has. When selecting module, weapon you want to equip it will show how much strain it's going to put on your power supply. to increase capacity, you'll need better power core

my suggestion, till you get confident with outfitting in general, whenever you do major changes, undock and deploy hard points (but don't shoot them). if things go horrible do module priority management or dock and change stuff.

Do NOT buy a "upgraded" Power Genrator right now. They are bugged to hell and back. I've had a ticket in for 24 hours now and no reply. I spent 8k upgrading to what said it had more power, less weight and increased my jump range. It did not. It shut down a third of my modules saying I did not have enough Power. Decided OK, a bug, I'll let it go and move on. Spent another 19K on a Power Generator that said it would give me almost 11k of power and increase my jump range slightly. It did add a little weight which is probably why it was just a small increase in jump range. What happened blew me away. It REDUCED my power to less than 8k. Shut down more modules. And the big kill? It REDUCED my jump range to 3.79LY. 3.79LY jump range in a loaded out MK III Cobra??? Now it may work perfect for you or even someone else. But it obviously did not for me and some others. So it's a crap shoot right now. I know I won't try again till they get it fixed. Not even trying to fly as I'm on the edge of space and can't even leave the system. :(

Possibly a stupid question but did you buy the right class power plant? The cobra uses class 4 power. If you bought a class 2 or 3 this might be the reason, I've had no issues upgrading power, and I've chopped and changed a lot looking for the right viper Loadout for me.

Edit - if you're spending 19k on a power generator you definitely have the wrong one, the class 4s are alot more expensive

When upgrading always look at the comparison given in the bottom right, it will show you that your total power is above your actual power.

You've probably bought the wrong class of power plant - I've upgraded my cobra several times and it works fine.....or you could just have an unusual bug.

The power distributer works with the Power Generator. I'm not sure, but I think there is something in having the right distributor first before upgrading your power plant.

Just came back to edit my post. Yes I always check ALL the specs of course. Been playing this for quite some time now. Since beta start anyhow. And I have and do play a ton of space and flight games for many, many years. But it's a moot point now. Just came back to say I now had the option to restart the game as if i just fired it up for the first time in release 1.0 so I'm a happy camper. I don't mind starting over. Nice to have that option back. Sitting with a "dead duck" was about as usefull as a screen door in a submarine, LOL. Still hope they get the bugs fixed. So many people are are so many different bugs right now. I can understand and sympatize with their dilemma. I wish all of them and all of you the best of luck. Have fun!
