Ship Builds & Load Outs Ship Dilemma

My dilemma is thus, Sell my A rated Vulture and buy and b+ outfit a FDL for BHing or sell my A rated (exploration A rated) asp explorer and buy and make an exploration python out of it. I Like to do both BH and exploration (best part about exploration ships is they can easily be converted for trading and mining in a jiffy). I know the jump range drops for me buy about 3.5 ly but my end goal is to move that python up to an exploraconda and the FDL, well it may for ever stay as a FDL but i also want to have other combat ships to play with. Thoughts?

Upgrade to the FDL and keep the Asp, because you can use the latter for the Robigo smuggling missions. These missions will earn you enough for a Python in the quickest time.

I would do the following:

1. Keep your Asp Explorer for exploration. Reason: For exploration two things are important and that is jump range and self sufficiency. If your Asp Explorer has a better jumprange and at the same time enough internal space for your needs (fuel scoop, scanners, auto field maintenance unit and maybe some cargo or a vehicle bay) there is no need to "upgrade" it to a Python which is a lot more expensive to outfit and leaves you with less jump range.

2. Regarding the combat ship dilemma: I don't know how your funds look like but you will need at least 80 million credits to have a combat FDL that is fun to fly and can hold it's own (that includes two rebuys, the FDL is about 70 million). If you don't have that much cash after selling your Vulture don't upgrade yet. Instead keep the Vulture for serious cash grinding and instead buy a couple of cheap ships for combat and just have fun. I recommend the Diamondback Scout, Viper III, Viper IV, Imperial Eagle and Imperial Courier. If you have enough cash, get a FDL, you will like it but be mindful of the terrible jump range. Once you have it, you will be making money in compromised nav beacons and RES sites quick and can try out the small ships as well.

Here is a starting FDL configuration that I use:

Remember you lose 10% when selling a ship so I'd strip the Vulture (or Asp) and store it, it's flight characteristics are very different to the FDL perhaps the FAS might be worth considering as it flies more like a Vulture.

The Python is a hugely versatile ship but it doesn't excel at a specific role (perhaps mining or cargo hauling to outposts), one ship I've had a lot of fun with recently is the FDS it's an inexpensive build that can BH as well as haul cargo and up armours well so it can take a real beating!

Currently I have 115mil with no ships stripped or sold. So i can almost fully A rate an fdl, can get everything i want besides military armor. The reason i toss in the asp as a sell is because, frankly... I don't like it. Heat management blows, heat sinks are not somethign I got used to in my DBX. Jump range is really nice though... I dont know... maybe i should actually take it out into the black real deep before i criticize it. I got really lazy with the carefree durability of the dbx. Oh and I never fly without rebuy :)

I went to 109 piscium to get my fdl... Turns out there is a very serious discount there right now, go tmy fdl for 43 mil... totally A rated it other than pp, only B and have more than enough for rebuy... Hell i even got the c4 pe..... Just for     s and explosions.

I used the Vulture to farm in HazRES, then brought an ASP and kitted it out for Robigo runs.
Used both the Vulture and the ASP to earn enough credits for an A rated FDL
Used the FDL for HazRES farming and now have enough for an A rated FAS

Pick the right tool (in this case ship) for the job .... The ASP is not suited for combat compared to the Vulture or FDL
but it can earn more credits per hour doing Shadow deliveries ..... for me 10-12 million per run whereas if I was HazRES farming, 5-6 million credits

So here's what I do - am I weird?

I have multiple Vultures scattered around inhabited space. The short jump range annoys me, so I have scattered several around. Then, whenever a combat CG comes up, or whatever, I pick the nearest Vulture and have at it! Use the Asp to ferry around between them. Vultures are SO good at combat at a low price point, it works out quite nicely.

I've tried the Python and Federal Assault, and sure those are more powerful in heavy combat, but the Vulture is more fun I think! And those guys are way too expensive to have several laying around, so you're doomed to a ton of jumps to get from one combat zone to another.

By the way, if a fast ship is what you're looking for, have you considered the FAS? Less shielding, more armor ... and noticeably more agile than the FdL. Also much less expensive. May allow you to keep your Asp so you can jump between the two.

I'd keep the Asp, even once you reach the very end of the game and have Cutters and Anacondas etc you'll find that you still have an Asp or 3 kicking about. It's such a useful ship. I have one for exploration, one for smuggling and one with weapons for travelling about in and doing missions.

Brand new to forums, Ahoy! Can anyone steer me towards an updated directory, or way to FIND: Class 5, 6, 7 outfitters for my Ship??

Welcome! check out:

1) This is an awesome site to find basically anything you might want
2) In the "Stations" section, you can search for stations selling particular Ships and/or Ship Modules.

TY for all the responses, I see overwhelmingly go for FDL and that is what I did. Fully A rated already so far, alot of fun. I will try the FAS some later time... I am 1% from having the required federal rank ( rank not something I grind at) AND I still have my ASP for when the itch gets me to go on my first pilgrimage to SAG A. Again, thanks guys this is a fantastic community.
