Ship engineering

I'm sure I'm not the first one to suggest support for ship engineering, but anyway...

We can engineer modules, we can engineer on-foot stuff. How about adding ship engineering to the mix? Some possible ideas:
  • More integrity to the ship's canopy, at the cost of added weight (which makes sense: Stronger canopy = heavier). Great for combat ships.
  • Better SCO handling (slower heat buildup, less fuel consumption, less sway). Could be unavailable to the new ships, and with old ships doesn't necessarily need to reach the same level of SCO handling as the new ships, but perhaps something between the two extremes. I don't know what the drawback could be (perhaps adds weight to the ship?)
  • Lighter ship (which increases jump range), perhaps at the cost of less hull integrity and poorer SCO handling (stronger sway, faster heat buildup).
  • Increased maneuverability (pitch, roll, yaw), perhaps at the cost of jump range or something else.

Well ships without modules are basically useless so we engineer the modules to achieve what you listed. Or am I missing something?

I think we have a kind of this feature in game already- each ship type can be considered as ship frame that can accommodate modules chosen by player, just some of them are in "fixed" state.
What if we would be able to customize that ship frame? I know this part of the game is taken care by developers but what if we players would be able to do it? Imagine starting from choosing ship hull frame (small, medium, large for example), then adding compartments for each core and optional internals, weapon and utility hardpoints, cargo compartment, engine compartment, cockpit compartment (single seat, 2 seat), etc. Each of those frames could have hull stress value which could not be breached (different for each ship hull frame) and each of those compartment would increase hull frame stress value. Existing ships could be used as presets.

About the only one I'd want is campy options. Everything else treads into other existing options too much
