That's the ticket buddy, you'll find you get quicker and quicker as you improve - then when you get a bunch of engineering done, it just snowballs!
Something I find invaluable in Res hunting is long range sensors, that I don't use any other type now, but it's each to their own of course. If you find your run out of targets, go up or below the ring about 1km (roughly), then roll 90deg, and pull a slow 360. You'll find that miners will try to run sometimes, so you can spot fights much easier this way. Use the planet as your marker.
If you still find it empty, head back towards the marker for the Res, a few km, and just loiter. Failing that, go about 4-5km above the ring, look down at the marker, and sweep a slow visual arc to spot scraps amongst the rocks and on the other side - sod's law says they are on the other side!
You will find after a while you'll be able to spot the "vapour trails" of enemy ships boosting along as distant lines - easiest to spot wings of targets like this. You can practice spotting these from a distance outside a station watching the security ships go around.
Lots of little tricks with Res hunting, but I don't want to bomb you with too many! Most people come up with their own ways to do things, but you can always give me a PM on here if I can help; I'm also happy to wing up if you want a hand at some point with tactics etc as it's easier said than done!
You're getting there though mate, really quickly

Don't be too disillusioned though with bounties and fines, as it happens to everyone no matter the experience. Just always be ready to bug out, and try to remember the nearest IF if you're at a regular place.
